Tasting Notes from Winemaker Allison Tauziet:

What I love about the IX Estate Red Wine from 2010 is the purity of flavors that come through from this special site. The clay iron, mineral notes mesh with the complexity of the crushed rock making the wine very distinctive. Add to that the cooling aromatics of the vintage, like fresh herb notes of rosemary and chocolate mint, and the wine becomes very vivid. With ten years of vine age here on the property, the flavors and texture to this wine are becoming more and more classic and true to what I consider an “old vine” nose. The layers of flavor continue with earthy notes of wet soil and graphite. Because of the superb balance and ripeness from 2010, the tannins coat the palate seamlessly. They are broad, suave and creamy. They also reflect the great structure which comes so easily in cooler styled vintages. Because of the freshness and harmony of the flavors and structure, I believe the 2010 IX Estate Red will age for nearly 30 years. I would suggest cellaring this wine for a minimum of 5-7 years before enjoying it, since it will likely age at a wonderfully slow pace.

The Story

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, IX Estate Napa Valley Red is distinguished by complex fruit interplays, a luscious nose of rustic herbs, iron, clay and black fruits, huge layers of flavor and supple, sweet tannins impeccably well-balanced. The number IX refers to the parcel number and is also significant as the date Ann and Joe were married: 9/9. The 2002 vintage was the first, of four vintages, from this property to achieve the highest accolade of “a perfect wine”. Each year the blend displays extraordinary intensity, a beautiful purity, and a remarkably long finish. Approachable when young, it ages most gracefully

Wine Information

2010 IX Estate, Napa Valley Red Wine

The 2010 Colgin IX Estate Napa Valley Red Wine is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The 2010 vintage was our ninth vintage from IX Estate, and we continue to be overjoyed with the quality of the wines from this site. As our vines become older with each passing year, the wines become more and more consistent. We take incredible care to maximize the potential from this site in so many ways. Through attentive tending of the vines, careful irrigations, strict crop thinning and thoughtful decisions of the timing of harvest, we work to bring out the absolute best in the IX Estate.

Written Notes

(63% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 6% petit verdot): Saturated ruby. Intense, rather wild savory aromas and flavors of black raspberry, soy sauce, mocha, tobacco and game, with a hint of chocolatey superripeness. Plush, rich and sweet, conveying lovely fullness without excess weight, with underlying minerality giving the very long finish a firm edge. Silky and elegant wine. These 2010s have pHs of around 3.85, which I gather is a tad lower than average.

Gorgeous expression of dark berry fruit, roasted herbs and velvety tannins. Balanced, layered, complex flavors that linger on the palate. Tannins are quite elevated but beautifully managed and well integrated with the fruit. One of the best vintages of IX Estate. Long length.

Colgin IX Proprietary Red Estate 2010 / Full 100 points / An intense, purplish ruby red colour. Extremely concentrated and stylish spicy nose, dominated by oak. Notes of ripe blackcurrant, fruitcake and coffee. Big and sophisticated structure comprised of medium acids, strong powdery ripe tannins and ripe berry. Long finish with undertones of spicy aromas, chocolate and coffee. Highly integrated alcohol in the mid-palate emphasised almost to the point of distraction at the close. All in all, an elegant vintage, with excellent tannic and acid structure. The current lack of intensive fruitiness means there is not a great deal of hope for long maturation potential. The wine's freshness does not do justice to the wine just yet, though. It will improve within a few years and reach its perfection in an estimated ten years.

The 2010 IX Estate is another perfect wine. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by copious aromas of blueberries, cassis, pen ink, asphalt, licorice and subtle oak. Full-bodied and rich but light on its feet, this spectacular effort was created from a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Enjoy this profound wine over the next 25+ years.

There are a lot of magnificent estates with Shangri-La-like beauty spread throughout California, and the Colgin property is in the top ten list for spectacular views as well as top quality. Sitting atop Pritchard Hill with stunning views of Lake Hennessey and the surrounding mountains, their IX Estate Vineyard is on a steep, intimidating hillside. It is one of the must-see attractions in Northern California, if not the entire state. The longstanding winemaking team of Ann Colgin, Allison Tauziet and Bordeaux consultant Dr. Alain Raynaud has produced some magnificent wines over the years (the 2001s, 2002s, 2005s, 2007s and 2008s) as well as amazing efforts in 2009, 2010 and 2012. There are three Bordeaux blend offerings, one from their Tychson Hill estate vineyard off Highway 29, north of St. Helena, and the second, the IX Estate blend. The Cariad is fashioned from a blend of grapes purchased from a number of David Abreu-s well-known and highly respected vineyards. There is also a fourth wine, the IX Estate Syrah, which is often a dead-ringer for a great Northern Rhone. In 2010, March and early April were very cold, but normal conditions persisted over the summer with no heat spikes, and September and October were ideally warm. The results include some spectacular wines that are among the finest I have ever tasted from Colgin. The 2011s were the result of a Draconian-like sorting procedure in both the vineyard and the winery, and significant bleeding of the tanks to concentrate the wines. The wines have turned out well, although as I might expect they are lighter and less significant than the other vintages reviewed. 2012 promises to be a spectacular vintage. This was a big as well as ripe crop (without over-ripeness), and the growing conditions were nearly ideal. In the past, I have underrated Colgin-s Syrahs only to have them in blind tastings later and be blown away by just how profound they are. They are completely different from any other California Syrahs and have an affinity to some of the great 100% single vineyard Syrahs from Michel Chapoutier and the up-and-coming firm of Delas.
