The Story

From an exceptional site that imparts earthy, ethereal notes of power and elegance, this signature cabernet reveals intense, deep layers of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, blackberry and freshly cut flowers that excite the palate. Incredibly long and round, it is our rarest wine, the 2002 vintage achieving our first perfect score as “a wine of enormous concentration, multiple dimensions, layers of flavor, and a sensational one minute plus finish. Its purity, harmony and symmetry are prodigious.”

Wine Information

The development of the fruit on the Tychson Hill Cabernet vines in 2005 was picture perfect. In order to concentrate the flavor and color of the grapes, we removed fruit from the vines on 3 different occasions in this vintage. The fruit was picked in the middle of October and arrived at our doorsteps with perfectly plump, fresh berries, and very little sorting was needed as we destemmed the fruit into the stainless steel tanks. After 41 days of maceration, the wine was gently drained from the skins and put into new French oak barrels, where it underwent malolactic fermentation and barrel aged for a total of 20 months before bottling in June 2007.

Winemaker notes from Allison Tauziet:

"My first impression of this wine at the time of release is how surprisingly demure it is at first. I know how much power is at the core of the wine, and so I find it fantastically seductive the way it pulls you in to explore its depths. At first it exhibits dark undertones of smoked cayenne, musk, and ripe plums, yet as it is exposed to air in the glass it slowly unfolds and expresses compelling organic aromas of peat, nutmeg, and savory grilled steak juices. The wine is incredibly soft and silky on the front of the palate, and gains an amazing amount of weight as it glides to the back. The texture is delicious and draws you back so easily with its elegant, lingering finish. Given the nature of the wines self expression at this time, I recommend 3 years of cellar age, and with that you will be handsomely rewarded. With the freshness of the acidity and the coating texture to the tannin, I anticipate a long lived bottle age of 20 or more years."

We released 250 cases of the 2005 "Tychson Hill Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon in November 2008. Release price $290.

Written Notes

olgin's 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is ripe, exotic and flashy, yet also remarkably fresh. A wine of intensity and pure Napa Valley voluptuousness, the 2005 hits all the right notes. Mocha, chocolate, dark cherry fruit and licorice are pushed forward in this sexy, racy, Tychson Hill. The 2005 is a real showstopper. Drink it over the next decade.

Young and closed at first but after 2 hours of decanting the wine opened up on the palate. Subtle layers of cassis, black currant, licorice and savory spices with velvety, sumptuous tannins. This small parcel of land farmed by Ann Colgin is a relatively new wine with the first vintage in 2000. Minute production means it is difficult to get allocation for this elegant, restrained Bordeaux-style Cabernet. Unlike Colgin's other offerings, this one is nearly 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

With a color saturation of purple ruby, this wine feels difficult to resist. First impressions on the nose reveal roasted herbs, grilled meat juices, juniper berry, black cherries and chocolate liqueur. Secondary aromas of terroir evolve out of this wine, such as wet clay, crushed rock, lavendar and mineral. On the palate, the wine has a supple entry with layers of lusciously textured tannin. A fresh natural acidity brings just the right amount of structure to the palate. The finish is vibrant and long. This wine was aged sur lees for 20 months and was racked just before blending and bottling in June 2007. The 2005 "IX Estate" will age for 30 or more years, but will also drink well in 4-6 years near term.

We released 1500 cases of the 2005 Colgin "IX Estate" in April 2008.
