The Story

From an exceptional site that imparts earthy, ethereal notes of power and elegance, this signature cabernet reveals intense, deep layers of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, blackberry and freshly cut flowers that excite the palate. Incredibly long and round, it is our rarest wine, the 2002 vintage achieving our first perfect score as “a wine of enormous concentration, multiple dimensions, layers of flavor, and a sensational one minute plus finish. Its purity, harmony and symmetry are prodigious.”

Wine Information

2010 Tychson Hill Vineyard, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2010 growing season in Napa Valley was cooler in nature. The season started off about 10 days behind average due to cooler temperatures and periods of rainfall in April and May. Because of the late spring, the vines grew very rapidly in May and June, making it imperative to work efficiently on the vine canopies to taper off the growth and bring balance to the vine. Mother nature brought her own balance to the vine also by creating less crop. The summer brought moderate temperatures, until the month of August when we experienced many days with dense foggy mornings. The heat returned in late August and the season began to catch up.

We were incredibly blessed to receive sunny warm weather into September and October. We took advantage of the beautiful weather for many weeks and picked all of our Cabernet the third week of October, just before the arrival of a rain storm which would bring a close to the season. Because of the cooler weather and later harvest, the grapes were harvested with wonderful levels of acidity, and with vividly preserved flavors. The longer hang time also resulted in wines with rich tannins and excellent structure. 2010 will be remembered as an excellent vintage at Colgin that is heralded for both its richness and balance.

Tasting Notes from Winemaker Allison Tauziet:
The 2010 Tychson Hill wine is seductive and elegant. The nose is initially filled with scents of black cherry liqueur and dark chocolate. Those qualities are tempered by the mineral aromas of graphite and talc, which come from the cobble-stone soil. The texture of this wine is silky and layered with the classic seamlessness from this tiny vineyard site. The long-growing season of 2010 brings the aromatics to a new level, yet maintains the purity of what Tychson Hill is known for. This is definitely an age worthy vintage of this wine, yet the suaveness that it shows today makes for absolutely delicious drinking near term with a longer decanting.

Written Notes

Deep red-ruby. Sappy aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, mocha and cracked pepper. Incredibly vivid and high-pitched on the palate, with the vibrant dark berry flavors complicated by orange peel, espresso and pungent minerality. Conveys an impression of great density without weight. Best today on the inexorable, slowly mounting finish, which finishes with substantial but utterly refined tannins and great lift and length. Stunning already but it would be a shame not to allow this beauty to express itself more fully, as it has the size, balance and acidity to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. I underrated this wine in the early going.

  • 97p

Cool vintage expression of herbs and blackberry fruit. Refreshing mix of dark berry fruit with lush, round tannins. Elegant wine that will need at least 5 years in bottle for the flavors to fully express themselves. An elegant wine with a long finish.
