Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Tychson Hill possesses a dark red fruit profile, expressing forward aromas of ripe black cherry and rich red raspberry. The seamlessness and elegance of this notable site are underscored by more power in 2012. The intensity of these flavors gives the sense of a perfectly ripe fruit picked just at its peak. Even more, an exotic and fragrant blend of floral blossom, vanilla and dark cocoa add layers of depth to the nose. The 2012 saturates the palate upon entry with its suave and graceful texture. As these plump tannins evolve, they gain succulence and density, possessing a savory quality of umami. A cobblestone mineral note persists to the finish.

The Story

From an exceptional site that imparts earthy, ethereal notes of power and elegance, this signature cabernet reveals intense, deep layers of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, blackberry and freshly cut flowers that excite the palate. Incredibly long and round, it is our rarest wine, the 2002 vintage achieving our first perfect score as “a wine of enormous concentration, multiple dimensions, layers of flavor, and a sensational one minute plus finish. Its purity, harmony and symmetry are prodigious.”

Written Notes

Deep, full ruby. Compelling sweetness to the aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals. Plush, layered and deep, boasting outstanding volume and inner-mouth perfume to the glossy flavors of dark berries, flowers, ginger and earth. This has all the elements for Cabernet greatness, dialed up to higher setting, and yet today it's hiding more than it's showing even if it already saturates every square millimeter of the palate with flavor. Finishes with huge but utterly sweet tannins and outstanding lingering perfume. A knockout for the vintage, boasting great density and aromatic character.

A beautiful wine with layers of flavors - plums, cassis, blackberries. Palate is explosive, with notes of cocoa and mocha in the finish. Generous crop that produced lots of juicy, opulent wines. Long length. A great vintage for Tychson Cab.

Tasting Notes from Winemaker Allison Tauziet:

This vintage of "IX Estate" captures all of the terroir and the varietal notes we love from this rocky, iron-rich site, with even a greater sense of volume. The wine is loaded with inky cassis, red currant, and black licorice aromatics. The grilled herbs, the iron, and the crushed rock flavors from "IX Estate" beam through the fruit giving this wine a perfect sense of place. The texture is lushly structured with immense volume and a long, persistent finish. The synthesis of fruit and earth reflect ripeness balanced with precision - a hallmark of this vineyard. The 2012 "IX Estate" is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is an absolutely profound wine, dense, bluish purple color to the rim with a stunning nose of acacia flowers, graphite, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. The wine is full-bodied and displays a multi-dimensional, skyscraper-like mouthfeel with no sense of heaviness or weight. An incredibly pure, rich, gorgeously constructed wine from a fabulous terroir, this is a stunner to drink now and over the next 30+ years.
