The Story

In 1876 when Tsar Alexander II requested that a special cuvée be created for his court Roederer duly obliged, creating what many regard to be the first prestige cuvée.

As the political situation in Russia was somewhat unstable, Tsar Alexander feared assassination. He ordered that Champagne bottles be made of clear glass, so that he could see the bubbles and to prevent anyone from hiding a bomb within, as could easily happen with a typical ...

Written Notes

The '75 is impressive and intense. If asked to taste this blind, I'd probably say it was a '76 with its full, oily, low-acidic, mature taste. The Pinot grapes are very dominant here. Gorgeous nuttiness. Sweet great house style and pronounced concentration. A uniform, chocolate toffee-tasting 2007.

There is a lot of variability in the 1975s. The vintage witnessed a late bud break and hot summer weather. Lack of direct sunshine post-poned the harvest, which averaged fairly high at 9082 kg/ha. There was attractive fruit intensity and high acidity, which should account for long-lived wines. Cristal alongside Clos des Goisses are in a remarkably youthful form today with no rush to open them. Clean, pure and fruity attractively developing nose. Fresh spicy and bready aromatics. Lightness of autolytic characters combined to lemony tartness makes the wine appear incredibly youthful and lively. Small sized bubbles on the mousse contribute to the feeling of roundness. Elegant, charmingly fruity wine with an acidic spine that can age harmoniously for another 10 years or more.

Top fill, tight cork. Towards golden, tiny bubbles. Flint, beeswax, minerals, smoke, floral, getting fresher and tighter with air, more focused. Stunning balance, fresh acidity, almost apricot stones, a bit lean finish, very long.
