69% Pinot Noir nd 31% Chardonnay. Disgorged March 2018. 4.5g/l. Definitely not austere. No malo. Really quite rich. Some real development on the nose! Really rich and pungent on the palate. The opposite of mouthwash! Some meat extract notes on the nose, Tight tiny bead and very dry, slightly bruised apple finish. Definitely a food champagne... A bit less barrel fermentation than usual - just 37% - presumably because of the richness of the vintage. Very long and reverberant. There is definitely richness here and I could imaging this standing up to a wide range of meat dishes. Creamy morel sauce with guinea fowl. 19,000 bottles made. Rich but not sweet.

Score: 18 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, September 2018

The 2009 Clos des Goisses Extra-Brut is composed of two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay. This is a big and powerful vintage with a savory character and dark red fruit (black cherries, raspberries), floral (elderflowers), yeasty, white chocolate and delicate citrus notes on the deep, spicy, very pure and mineral nose. On the palate, this is a complex, highly elegant, finessed and balanced Clos that Charles compares with 1998 in terms of flavors, depth and structure. The 2009 is super delicate right now and is already drinking beautifully, but the it will even improve and receive new dimensions with bottle age. Disgorged in March 2018. Tasted April 2018.

Score: 94+ Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (237), June 2018

The Story

Belonging exclusively to Philipponnat, the Clos des Goisses is an exceptional vineyard of 5,5 Ha enclosed by walls, with an impressive gradient of 30 to 45°, facing full south, where Philipponnat produces the most powerful of Champagne wines. Always vintaged, very lightly dosed, this uncommon wine is characterized by incredible length and body, in which Pinot Noir characteristics predominate. This fabulous wine for great occasions, extraordinarily mineral and intense is also a marvelous companion for gastronomy matching game, mushrooms and even cheeses.

Vinification: Wine-making for Clos des Goisses is totally traditional. Its only originality resides in the absence of malo-lactic fermentation, which is systematically avoided. Thus, the wine maintains a vivacity and freshness that balances its alcoholic strength, its intensity, its roundness without masking any of its body and aromas and, on the contrary, contributes to its persistence. Wood, in this elaboration philosophy, is only partially used (30%); rather as a minor element in blending only there to increase complexity.

Aging: Very mature and intense, Clos des Goisses is an open, aromatic wine, although closed when young. Ageing in our own cellars is not so much destined to round it out, but rather to add still greater dimension and complexity. Ideal ageing is from 8 to 10 years, the prime of life for Clos des Goisses. At this age, the wine attains its greatest complexity without having lost its freshness. It is at this point that degorgement is carried out and the wine readied for sale. The structure of the wine is such that it will age gracefully for decades if kept in an adequate environment (cool and dark). One should not be afraid to decant Clos des Goisses before service to let the wine reveal its full potential.

Clos des Goisses could only be served with meals as it is a wine in the truest sense of the term. It marries perfectly with foie gras, truffles, red meats, game and dishes with sauce. A wine as much as a Champagne, Clos des Goisses deserves to be put into a decanter. With in the ample curves of a ewer, it reaches its full potential as a fine wine: aromatic power, finesse and voluptuousness. Contrary to the preconceived notion that Champagne does not improve with age, this Champagne is perfectly suited to ageing and may he kept for more than 10 years.

Vintage 2009

Warmest conditions since 2003, optimal maturity, healthy fruit. Balanced wines with average sugars, lower acidities. High overall maturity. Vintage year for some, principally récoltants-manipulants (individual growers). In ’09, new EU rules reduced dosage for Brut to 12 g/l.

Written Notes

Super complex and rich, this smells regal with toasted brioche and praline, as well as preserved-lemon, fresh-fig and biscuity notes. The palate is full and round with a chalky core that delivers a long, dry and powerful finish.

The 2009 Clos des Goisses, tasted from a trial disgorgement, is more than a worthy follow up to the stunning 2008. Bright, focused and powerful, with terrific freshness for the year, the 2009 is pure sensuality. To be sure, there is plenty of vintage 2009 radiance to the citrus, orchard fruit and pastry flavors, but the blocked-malo style helps the wine retain plenty of verve. The 2009 is 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay, with no malolactic fermentation. Charles Philipponnat chose to scale down the number of lots fermented in oak to 37% in order to temper some of the natural richness of the year. He seems to have succeeded, as the 2009 retains terrific vibrancy.

“Made every year, including 2001 – 7,000 bottles! (But none in 1984.) The 2009 is the current release (2010 to be released in September 2019). Disgorged March 2018. Dosage 4.5 g/l. 61% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay. pH 3.25.
Quite rich and very seductive. Low acid. Long and comforting.”

This sumptuous Clos des Goisses is so, so fruity. On the nose the overt and exotic appley and peachy fruitiness is complemented by a stylish savoury note with perky spicy nuances and sweet pastry complexity. The palate is caressingly soft with the finest, gentle and perfectly integrated mousse. There is genuine charm here already now but it is built to last, with round, full, fruity power carrying the generous palate.
