A challenging vintage for Champagne in the face of an unprecedented heatwave during the summer months. The wines are characterised by the year's unusual circumstances. Large-scale frosts destroyed most of the projected yield and they were followed by hail and an extremely hot summer. Philipponnat Cuvée 1522 2003
Ripe, rich, opulent and smokey nose with yellow apples, grilled lemon, toasted rice and browned butter. Smell almost more of a ripe Meursault than Champagne.
Full bodied but lacks a bit of concentration on the mid-palate that has plenty of ripe fruit, Japanese pear, cloudberries, red apples and grapefruit. Bit short and toasty finish with grapefruit and mineral notes.
