The Story

Belonging exclusively to Philipponnat, the Clos des Goisses is an exceptional vineyard of 5,5 Ha enclosed by walls, with an impressive gradient of 30 to 45°, facing full south, where Philipponnat produces the most powerful of Champagne wines. Always vintaged, very lightly dosed, this uncommon wine is characterized by incredible length and body, in which Pinot Noir characteristics predominate. This fabulous wine for great occasions, extraordina...

Wine Information

The Clos des Goisses vineyard is owned by the Philipponnat champagne house and the Philipponnats have lived in the Champagne region since the 17th century. Pierre and Auguste Philipponnat founded the champagne house in 1910 in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, roughly five kilometers from the city of Epernay.
Their first vineyards ( 17 hectares ), including Clos des Goisses, were acquired in the mid 1930s. Today only a quarter of the estates y...

Vintage 1988

CHAMPAGNE: From this year, the most classic and refined champagnes were producedChampagnes are long-lived and mature slowly to their peak.

Winter and spring were fairly mild. Inflorescences began in good weather in June. Already during the next month, the cloud masses swarmed to the Champagne province. Finally, the sky broke right before harvest. The harvest remained smaller than in the previous year. Even though the weather was unstable,...

Written Notes

Great magnum. Decanted ten minutes. Full goldfish colour. Delicate intense and toasty nose with some perfumed tropical fruit and toffee tones. Very powerful, aromatic wine, full bodied and mouth-filling toasty flavours, redcurrant and strawberry fruit. Good acidity and a long fresh, finish with white chocolate and apple flavours. Very pleasant now but should develop well in the bottle.

I will never quite understand how Clos des Goisses behaves when it is young. Experience has shown that all vintages become powerful packages as they grow old. The 88 is not as undeveloped and grassy as the 82 was at the same age. Instead it is only medium-bodied and delicate, with bready, toasty aromas and a fine, crispy fruitiness. Some bottles are actually medicinal with a taste of gooseberries. What will happen to it?

Good looking magnum size bottle, is in a excellent condition and level is 2cm ullage below the cork. Colour is and looking healthy, evolved and medium. On the nose it is mature, refined, opulent, ripe and pure. The taste is round, focused, vigor, perfumed, medium-bodied, with balanced, well-integrated and complex structure. On the palate it is layered and has perfumed, raspberry, honey, herbs, steely, tropical fruits, truffles, vanilla and citrus flavours. The finish is long, extensive, lingering and flavorful. This wine is sophisticated and transparent. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 15min before tasting.
