The Story

Belonging exclusively to Philipponnat, the Clos des Goisses is an exceptional vineyard of 5,5 Ha enclosed by walls, with an impressive gradient of 30 to 45°, facing full south, where Philipponnat produces the most powerful of Champagne wines. Always vintaged, very lightly dosed, this uncommon wine is characterized by incredible length and body, in which Pinot Noir characteristics predominate. This fabulous wine for great occasions, extraordina...

Wine Information

Climbing the steep hill of Clos des Goisses against the shadows of the setting sun, our thoughts settled and the busy day seemed like yesterday. The sounds of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ village below had grown fainter and were accompanied only by the last rays of the vanishing sun.
The peace was perfect on that even hilltop. The 5,5 hectare vineyard that spread out around us is the best known after Krug´s Clos du Mesnil. Even after sunset the southern s...

Written Notes

Clos des Goisses is the champagne that has taken me the longest to get to know. This vintage is a kind of key, as the wine’s magnificent maturity is relatively clear in it, while still maintaining some of the young, somewhat tricky aromas. Slightly coarser than expected now that maturity seems to have set in.

Clos des Goisses 1975/ Philipponnat, a medium-sized champagne house, is famous for its single vineyard luxury cuvée Clos des Goisses, and deserves the credit for being the first major producer of a single vineyard champagne. The vast 5.5 ha parcel of Clos des Goisses in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ must be the most beautiful vineyard in Champagne. The steep slope overlooks the river, and the exposure is so phenomenal that the wines manage to attain a 1-1.5% higher level of alcohol every year compared to the regional average. The history of the plot is complex. The difficult period of phylloxera, the First World War and the following depression brought the plot from Montebello to the hands of Philipponnat in 1935. Production of single vineyard wine had already begun at that time. The wine was labelled as Vin des Goisses until 1959. The vineyard consists of 14 different plots with various planting dates. Initially it was planted with 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, but over the years most of the replanting has been done with Pinot Noir, that now comprises over 60% of the total. Stringent selection takes place at the blending phase conducted by blind tastings. Only part of the wine from the parcel ends up in the Clos des Goisses wine. Their ideology of winemaking is to produce great “wine”, not sparkling wine. Clos des Goisses is produced from very ripe grapes, picked at separate dates. Lutte Raisonnée is practised to maximise the terroir expression. Malo-lactic is mostly avoided and the wine is never acidified nor chaptalised, a rarity in Champagne. The hot vintage of 1975 produced a small very concentrated harvest. Bright, golden yellow colour. Rich and voluptuous nose with toasty, roasted coffee flavours and delicious aromas of breakfast with toast and apricot marmelade. Big palate with crisp acidity, rich honeyed fruitiness, toasty, round and complex taste with long mineral finish. Gracefully developed wine ready to be toasted in special events!
