Perrier-Jouët is opening its door to the public a very first time by offering a virtual tour of its cellars

Panoramas, zooms, enriched content: through a particularly rich intuitive, entertaining and interactive journey, Internet, tablet and smartphone users will finally be able to explore a House founded more than two centuries ago.

In the secret cellars of Perrier-Jouët in Épernay, the visitor follows the main stages of how champagne is made, from tending the vines to maturing in the cellars, not withstanding the art of blending. This interactive tour will also take the visitor to the "Eden", the cellar reserved for the oldest vintages, the area dedicated to the Cuvée By & For, the vault created in 2011 for the bicentenary of the House, as well as "Lost Time", an installation as poetic as it is dramatic by studio Glithero. Accessible starting in October 2015, this exploration will continue in 2016 with the virtual tour of the Maison Belle Époque, revealing the extraordinary collection of art nouveau furniture and objects it contains.

Warren and Nick, the London-based photographers who created Perrier-Jouët's alluring journey into Enchanted Nature, are regarded as two of the industry’s leading artists within image making and film. Their distinctive approach and unique process with light and form creates masterpieces that often look more painterly than photographic.

Join us as Warren du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones guide you on a journey through their vision of Perrier-Jouët’s artistic heritage and distinctive wine style.

THE INSPIRATION

“Everyday life — the essence of enchantment — is suspended in the realms of our subconscious
and our imagination, which is projected into our own interpretation of nature and the art within life.”

Historia

Belle Epoque Fleur de Champagne joined the elite trio of Prestige Cuvées Dom Pérignon, Crystal and Comte de Champagne as late as 1964, although the Fleur de Champagne love story began nearly 200 years ago with a man named Perrier and a woman named Jouët. It continues today in a flowered bottle named Fleur.

He was a handsome young Frenchman, passionate about champagne. She was Dutch, a charming hostess and a savvy businesswoman in her own right. In 1811, 25-year-old Pierre-Nicolas Marie Perrier and his wife, 19-year-old Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, founded Champagne Perrier-Jouët in Épernay, France. The popularity of Champagne Perrier Jouët soon spread beyond France and the first shipment went to Great Britain in 1815 and by 1837 straw-filled baskets carrying 2.000 bottles of Champagne Perrier-Jouët arrived in New York. Perrier-Jouët was a favorite of the court of Queen Victoria and the favorite champagne of Edward VII.

In 1902, the Fleur de Champagne story began with four magnums, which were created by master glassmaker Émile Gallé and decorated with an arabesque of anemones. Then owner Henri Gallice commissioned Gallé, a founder of the Art Nouveau movement, to create the bottles in honor of the Belle Epoque, or the "beautiful era" of art, literature and music. Because the bottles were handmade and very expensive to produce, production of any significance at the time was out of the question. Coupled with the fact the champagne market entered a crisis period, the bottles were stored for a more prosperous time.Nearly sixty years later in 1964, the four magnums were discovered by marketing director Pierre Ernst and cellar master André Baveret who were eager to relaunch the Fleur Champagne. The bottle was so strikingly beautiful, that they decided to fill it with a prestige Champagne. Saved for the bottling were the best grands crus, composed of a predominance of Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs district.

However, the greatest challenge was to find a glass worker who could replicate the bottle, since Émile Gallé's workshop and enameling techniques had long ago disappeared. Ernst discovered a family firm - founded by Jean Bigou and located in Argenteuil - who could apply the flower motifs by relief enameling with sufficient authenticity. The first bottle of the celebrated 1964 Fleur de Champagne was uncorked in 1969 at Maxim's in Paris to celebrate the seventieth birthday of Duke Ellington, where he played with a magnum of Cuvée Belle Époque an top of the piano. Since then this precious cuvée was also sold commercially, but at first only at Maxim ́s and at the prestigious Parisian food store Fauchon. The production started in 1965 from just 5.000 bottles of 1964 vintage, and no one in those days would have estimated that within twenty years about 600.000 would be produced in a good year.

65 hectares, ranked at 99.2% on the scale of grands crus, and 5 of the most important wines, without which this exceptional champagne could not exist.

The Perrier-Jouët family has owned vines in Champagne since the early 18th century. Down the decades, this heritage was enriched with discernment and precision, based on the style the family wished to adopt for its wines. The excellence of the raw materials has always been a major preoccupation, and particular attention is given to the noble chardonnays, which lend such particular character to the House wines.

In the first half of the 20th century, Perrier-Jouët acquired two legendary terroirs, the Bourons Leroy and Bourons du Midi. The Perrier-Jouët vineyards border on perfection – as testified by the evaluation criteria of the Champagne AOC. Each cuvée comprises the 5 principal wines of "Champagne's magic triangle" which form the backbone of the House's vineyards and give its compositions length and balance.

Cramant and Avize (Côte des Blancs), Mailly (Montagne de Reims), Aÿ and Dizy (Vallée de la Marne).
Perrier-Jouët owns the best plots in the entirety of the Côte des Blancs (Cramant and Avize grands crus). Ideally situated, planted mid-slope and exposed to the South-Southeast, favouring the excellent maturity of the chardonnay, the House's variety of choice, they give the wine its generous white floral aromas.

The pinots noirs on the Mailly grand cru, fresher and more delicate than those of the south mountain and the pinots noirs of Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne add extra elegance with their fresh fruity pinots meuniers notes. They provide a fine structure for the chardonnays of the Côte des Blancs, while never dominating. Meanwhile, the generous and fruity of the Dizy premier cru add charm, roundness and generosity to the cuvées.

Viinivalmistus

Maison Perrier-Jouët's 8th cellar master is Séverine Frerson, who has been working alongside with Hervé Deschamps, the Maison’s Cellar Master, who is preparing for his succession after 35 years at the Maison.

Hervé Deschamps arrived at Maison Perrier-Jouët in 1983. A decade later, he became the seventh Cellar Master since the Maison was founded over 200 years ago. As a guardian of Perrier-Jouët’s style, he has maintained the floral and intricate character of the Maison’s cuvées: the non-vintage Classics range, as well as the Belle Epoque vintage collection. For over twenty years, he has shared his passion for champagne all over the world; his influence spreads from the Maison to French culture itself, a contribution which was officially recognised in 2016 when he was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Hervé Deschamps is now passing on the values of Maison Perrier-Jouët to Séverine Frerson. Over the coming years, they will work closely together to preserve the elegance and quality of the Maison’s champagnes.

Séverine Frerson has been the Cellar Master of Piper-Heidsieck, the Maison she has been with for the past sixteen years. She is one of only a handful of women to hold such a position in Champagne and will now become the first female Cellar Master in the history of Maison Perrier-Jouët.

Originally from Reims, Séverine Frerson studied oenology and has always been guided by her passion for wine. Throughout her extensive career, Séverine Frerson has acquired a remarkable technical expertise, complemented by both an exceptional intuition and memory that allow her to know each wine in all of its complexity.
