The 2015 L'Evangile is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc picked between September 15 and October 5, and September 29 to October 5 respectively. Matured almost in 100% new oak, it has a very pure and charming bouquet, the Merlot dominant and slightly shrouding the Cabernet Franc at the moment. It is worth staying with this Pomerol, because it does change after four to five minutes in the glass, revealing touches of truffle and iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, understated on the entry but gaining momentum in the glass, retaining a wonderful sense of symmetry and finishing with precision and class. This could well be the pick of the wines from the Domaines Barons Rothschild stable in 2015 and kudos to winemaker Jean-Pascal Vazart. Drink 2025-2055.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (224), April 2016

What a wine here. It is so traditional and powerful with super depth of fruit and chewy tannins. Full body, incredible concentration and length. It’s so muscular and powerful. So minerally and nutty (walnuts). Marvelous.

Score: 99/100

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

One of the highlights of the year, the 2015 L'Évangile is deep, powerful and intense, with remarkable concentration and plenty of power. Dark fruit, exotic spice and new leather are all pushed forward. A dramatic, towering wine, the 2015 is endowed with real density, big, but creamy tannins and exceptional balance, especially for a wine of its size. The blend is 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, brought in between September 15 and October 5, and September 29 and October 6 respectively. Seventy percent of the production went into the Grand Vin, which is aging in 100% new oak. The 2015 is a powerhouse that will need considerable bottle age to be at its best.

Score: 94/97

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2016

Rich, powerful and densely constructed, this is a super-charged Pomerol with plush, voluptuous fruit flavours, lots of toasty new oak, good concentration and a hint of figgy overripeness. The Cabernet Franc adds some much-needed freshness here. Drink: 2022-32

Score: 94

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016

Extremely dark crimson. Floral, opulent nose. Something quite masculine and leathery - animal? - on the nose. Lots of intensity and sweetness. Almost chocolatey! Tannins not quite integrated yet, but they are quite sandpapery. A little bit of heat on the end. A wine that takes you to the limit of sweetness. 14.8% Drink 2022-2035

Score: 17.5

The Story

The Léglise family from Libourne founded what is now Château L’Evangile. They were actively involved, around the middle of the 18th century, in building the Pomerol vineyard. L’Evangile appeared in the 1741 land registry under the name of Fazilleau.

At the turn of the 19th century, the estate already had much of its current configuration, stretching over some 13 hectares, when it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert. He renamed the estate “L’Evangile”. In 1862, L’Evangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the property’s owners until 1990. Paul Chaperon went on making the estate becoming famous, and constructed the L’Evangile in the style of the Second Empire. In the second edition of Cocks Féret in 1868, L’Evangile is registered and is considered as a “Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol”.

Upon the death of Paul Chaperon around 1900, his descendants ran the estate until Louis Ducasse took over the property, which was then in decline and damaged by the frosts of 1956. He put forth great efforts in renewing the vineyard and restoring the L’Evangile name. In 1982, his widow, Simone Ducasse, continued the family’s role in running the estate.

In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired L’Evangile from the Ducasse family. DBR was interested in bringing sustained care to the operation. DBR’s initial influence included a more refined selection of the fine wines, and the creation of Blason de L’Evangile as a second wine. Efforts also included enhancing the vines’ health with a restoration and renewal plan partially completed until 1998. The complete renovation of the vat room and the cellar which was finished in 2004 allowed the property to complete its new configuration.

The estate occupies a very strategic position. It is bordered to the north by the vineyards of Château Pétrus, and is separated from Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion to the south by nothing more than a secondary road.

The surface area is of 16 hectares composed of sandy clay soils with pure stones, with the bedrock featuring iron oxide. The grape varieties are made up of Merlot (80%) which contributes to the fruity flavour and body, as well as the unmistakable suppleness; Bouchet, the local name of Cabernet Franc is included (20%) for its finesse. Traditional techniques are used. Production is limited and harvesting and other work carried out throughout the year is done manually.

The vineyard is managed by the Director of the Domaines Charles Chevallier, assisted by Operations Manager Jean Pascal Vazart.

CLIMATOLOGY AND VITICULTURE

In 2015 the climate in Bordeaux was hot and rainfall varied widely, with differences of nearly 300 mm in the annual totals between our different properties in the region.A recurring phenomenon in recent years, the start of winter was mild and dry, and the beneficial cold snap came only at the end of January, accompanied by rain.

Bud burst started at the beginning of April as usual and the vines then developed rapidly thanks to the water reserves and the mild climate. In June, flowering was early and even, a promising sign before the harvest.

Summer temperatures often went over 35°C at L’Évangile and Rieussec, while Lafite and Duhart-Milon benefited from the influence of the ocean and the estuary.Water stress was high everywhere, but the rains in August brought the necessary freshness for the véraison and then for perfect ripening.

Ideal conditions came together at the time of the harvest, allowing each terroir to give of its best: the result brings high hopes.

Vuosikerta 2015

Conditions during 2015 were ideal. After a fairly mild winter, the vines’ growth cycle started normally in early April. Spring brought fine weather with gentle temperatures and relatively little rain. Flowering was fast and uniform, promising a plentiful harvest. The summer was magnificent with well-above average temperatures in July and light showers just when they were needed, creating conditions in which the vines were able to flourish. A very hot August was followed by a superb September. Some rain arrived just before the harvests, allowing the grapes to reach a perfect state of ripeness, and making this a truly exceptional vintage.

Deep garnet-purple in color, it absolutely leaps from the glass with complex, gregarious notes of blackberry pie, plum preserves, smoked meats/charcuterie, mocha and licorice plus suggestions of cloves, black soil and unsmoked cigars. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and jaw-droppingly sexy, it has beautifully plush yet firm tannins with a lively backbone and a very long, spicy finish.

  • 97p
Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Aromatic nose reminiscent of fresh crushed grapes, gingerbread spices, hints of roasting aroma. On the palate well structured with opulent start but fresh finish, good mid-palate with balanced tannins and sweet fruit. Very opulent but also fresh character with excellent length and very accessible style.
  • 98p
Dark fruits, blueberries, some spices, floral notes, quite intense and more full bodied nose than the neighbours. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, ripe, intense,d ark and red berries, fuller bodied, juicy, firmer structure and texture, long. 95-97

TASTING NOTES (AT BOTTLING)

Deep, dense colour with glints of violet. Very expressive nose with black fruit and subtle notes of toast. On the palate, the attack is powerful, dense and structured.  The mid-palate is full-bodied, with a fine, well-balanced tannic structure. The finish has plenty of volume with superbly ripened tannins, while remaining elegant and refined, thanks to the quality of the grapes of this exceptional vintage.
