The Story

The power and elegance of a great Pauillac. Daring, innovative and known for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined the style of Lynch-Bages in the 1930's. The wine's distinctive character earns it its place amongst Pauillac's greatest. It combines structure, finesse and elegance. It is generous in its youth and develops more complex aromas with bottle age.

Wine Information

At the gates of Pauillac, the Lynch-Bages Estate owes part of its name to the ancient hamlet of Bages, which for centuries was home to generations of winemakers.

The area of “Batges” is mentioned as early back as the sixteenth century in the terriers (estate records) of Lafite. The vineyard was established and then expanded by the Déjean family, one with a lineage of Pauillac dignitaries, solicitors, judges and merchants. Its great wine his...

Excellent magnum. Decanted two hours. Fine, opaque purple colour. Dense, ripe, powerful nose with notes of roasted herbs, smoky, toasty oak and sweet currants. Overflowing, fat body and well rounded with oaky, earthy and spicy cassis flavours. Good ripe tannins and high acidity. A huge and rich wine, almost as good as Haut-Brion 1989, but not as elegant and refined. Soft tannins and good acidity. Long finish with flavours of leather, cassis and tobacco. Firm and complex, this is drinking amazingly well now, but should go on for another 15 or 20 years.

Waterfall came first in the nose of the 1989 Lynch Bages, which is not that common in Bordeaux. There was a bit of stable in the nose, but not really quite that. There was some espresso, but not really quite that, either. Cola, that was there really, as was peanut J. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks – sautéed string beans yum! The palate was big and rich, quite enormous and even more impressive in its power than the Leoville Barton. There was enough alcohol here for a high school prom. The ’89 was still quite young. It was big, black and dark. Did someone say something about….never mind (95).

(4.7 g/l total acidity; 13.4% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Still youthfully closed but highly complex nose hints at cassis, minerals, gunflint and Oriental spices. Quite clean and juicy, boasting lovely precision and size to its flavors of small dark berries, smoky plum, coffee and minerals. This pure, long wine finishes with enticingly soft flavors of red cherry and marzipan. Though rich and opulent, this graceful, seamless wine can still age effortlessly. Maybe the best Lynch-Bages of the last 30 years.

Ruby, garnet rim. Rich nose, intense, dark berries, cassis, cedar, sweet tobacco, morellos, plums, stone from fruits far behind. Vanilla and licorice stroke the fruit every now and then. Fine black tea. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, superb balance, hedonistic and elegant, needed ours in decanter to open, hours. Fresh, long and lingering finish, a bit oaky and still a bit edgy. This is still fairly young. I think my best bottle. Superb.
