The Story

Cariad, the Welsh word for “love”, is a Bordeaux-style red wine blended from three outstanding vineyards owned and managed by David Abreu. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch are blended with small amounts of fruit from Thorevilos and Howell Mountain, producing a wine of enormous proportions with a classic structure that is the Colgin hallmark: a plethora of vibrant aromas, voluptuous at mid-palate, with impeccable balance and an exceptionally long finish. A wine as seductive as its name.

Wine Information

The 2011 "Cariad" takes full advantage of the vintage by pulling from the unique sites we farm for this wine. From Madrona Ranch we capture the brightness and beauty of the aromatics from the early season. From Thorevilos and Howell Mountain we capture the density and richness of later maturing sites. Coupled together they form more than just the sum of their parts, creating a 2011 "Cariad" that is brimming with purity, freshness and density. Concentrated aromas of dark cherry, licorice, and grilled meat jump from the glass. Beautiful notes of incense, chocolate and orange peel flirt in and out of the dark core of fruit. An amazing amount of minerality comes through in this wine, with notes of cobble, iron, wet stone, and forest floor. The texture of the 2011 "Cariad" is true to its classic profile every vintage. The wine is layered with silky, luscious, almost oily tannin. This dense, palate coating wine is deep in color and long on the finish. Supported by its natural acidity and the fine polish of the tannins, this is the Colgin wine for decades of aging.

Written Notes

Extremely aromatic with lead pencil and hints of currant undertone. Full body, with silky tannins and a very, very long finish. The texture is just right. This is so racy and refined with fabulous texture. I love the savory character. A wine with a solid core of fruit and super silky tannins. It is beautiful and dense yet refined.

There is enormous beauty to be found in the 2011 vintage! The experiences of the season are what help distinguish the pedigree of the Colgin vineyard sites from others. The 2011 growing season in Napa Valley seems only to be recognized for its challenges, yet a great site can take challenges in stride. With a wet start to the season, we have a significant advantage in that each of our sites is planted on hillsides with well-draining rocky soils. Given the wet spring, we experienced one of our latest blooms on record in June. The summer followed with relatively mild temperatures during which time we worked diligently in the vineyard to reduce the canopy and bring the vines into balance. At veraison in late August, we removed enough clusters to ensure a consistent, even ripening. We began our harvest the final week in September and picked virtually all of our Merlot and Syrah in this period. Two small rain events the first week of October hastened the progress of the harvest-yet what followed was altruistic, sunny weather which remained through the completion of the harvest season. We picked the Cabernet Sauvignon the second half of October and our conscientious team ensured only the most pristine berries were sorted into the fermentation tanks. The wines were made with a slightly more delicate hand in order to capture their freshness and respect the fruit. The resulting wines of the 2011 vintage are brilliantly aromatic. They have deliciously round tannin and are bolstered by a bright and balanced level of acidity. The flavors of each site truly stand out in this vintage, and the quality of the wines is a testament to the quality of the terroirs upon which they are grown.
