The 2007 vintage was our sixth vintage from IX Estate, and we continue to be overjoyed with the quality of the wines from this site. As our vines become older with each passing year, the wines become more and more consistent. We take incredible care to maximize the potential from this site in so many ways. Through attentive tending of the vines, careful irrigations, strict crop thinning and thoughtful decisions of the timing of harvest, we work to bring out the absolute best in the IX Estate. With all of this attention to detail, coupled with a stellar growing season, we are thrilled with our 2007 IX Estate Red Wine.

The 2007 IX Estate Red is a strikingly deep ruby color and the nose a concentrated elixir of all the wonderful aromatics I love about IX Estate. In 2007, the flavors of the terroir are more dominant than ever. This vintage just has more of everything it seems. Terroir driven flavors of crushed rock, wet graphite, bay leaf and barbecue rub saturate the wine. Aromas of grilled meats, fennel seed, and a lift of black licorice bring seduction to the nose. With a sip, the pliant, silky tannins melt over the palate. The 2007 is dense to the core in every way, but at the same time it is open, expressive and alluring. It will drink well near term with its supple, rich tannins, but patience will be greatly rewarded, as the structure and natural acidity beneath will allow the wine to age 30 years or more.

The 2007 Colgin IX Estate Red Wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot

The Story

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, IX Estate Napa Valley Red is distinguished by complex fruit interplays, a luscious nose of rustic herbs, iron, clay and black fruits, huge layers of flavor and supple, sweet tannins impeccably well-balanced. The number IX refers to the parcel number and is also significant as the date Ann and Joe were married: 9/9. The 2002 vintage was the first, of four vintages, from this property to achieve the highest accolade of “a perfect wine”. Each year the blend displays extraordinary intensity, a beautiful purity, and a remarkably long finish. Approachable when young, it ages most gracefully

Wine Information

The 2007 vintage was defined by an exceptionally good growing season from beginning to end. The Napa Valley received just 60% of normal rainfall, encouraging our vines to begin bud break a week ahead of schedule. A mild spring followed, with several light rains that helped the vines to cope with the mild drought. Sunny, beautiful weather during bloom resulted in fruitful clusters that were uniform in size and maturity. A wonderfully moderate summer followed, with cooler than average temperatures, allowing for slow, even development of the berries. By late August, the berries were intensely pigmented and showing signs of outstanding quality. A short heat wave around Labor Day resulted in our earliest picking of Merlot ever at Colgin. But cool weather soon followed, allowing the Cabernet to hang longer, and to develop ripe tannins, at lower sugar levels, with great natural acidity. Overall, the 2007 vintage was truly a winemaker's dream. The wines are defined by their intense color, their deep aromatics, and their coating and supple tannins.

Deep, purple colour. Complex and lovely toasty nose with roasted coffee and touch of bacon. Full-bodied and elegant mouthfeel with satiny texture, well-integrated tannins and vivid acidity. Elegant and refined cassis fruit character. Long and harmonious finish that shows power as well as elegance.

Classy, intense and vibrant, full-bodied and layered, with wonderful balance, this red delivers vivid blackberry, wild berry, mineral, anise and dusty, cedary oak flavors that are trim and focused, yet expansive, as they unfold. Ends with a long, detailed finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2011 through 2021.

  • 97p

Beautiful nose of plum, black tea leaf, violets and dark savory spices. Palate is generous, ripe, complex and rich with layers of gorgeous flavors including mocha, cocoa beans and blackberry. Wonderful harmony and depth in this wine with an extremely long finish. Napa Cabernet at its best.
