The Story

Les Cintres is one of a trio of single plot cuvées, of which 2008 is the second vintage after 2006. The cuvée comes from vines grown on hillsides, which are the most exposed to sun and the oldest (up to 70 years of age), at the heart of this exceptional vineyard. 2,187 bottles produced.

the blend

100% Pinots Noirs. 100% first-press juice from the central plots « Les Grands Cintres » and « Les Petits Cintres » in Clos des Goisses, Mareuil-sur-Ay.

vinification

Vinified using traditional methods to avoid premature oxidation, with no malolactic fermentation. All the wines are fermented in casks. "Extra-brut" dosage (4.5 g/litre) to maintain a balance between freshness and vinosity without masking the wine’s character and purity.

aging

Aged for more than nine years in the House’s cellars at a constant temperature of 12°C to develop maximum complexity and to highlight the wine’s secondary and tertiary aromas, which are the hallmark of extended aging on lees.

Vintage 2009

This warm year started with a cold winter and mild spring temperatures. Early summer was variable but August and September provided ample sunshine and warmth contributing to fine grape health. Pinot Noir especially excelled. Grape harvest, of generally high sugar content yet soft acidity, started on September 8th. 2009 is a year of generous wines that showed well early. An apt example of a vintage of the recent era, in which retaining freshness poses more problems than attaining ripeness. Good grape health contributed to the overall quality, and despite the richness of the wines, heaviness did not end up being an issue. There is quite some heterogenity amongst the year's produce but the best seem truly age-worthy. The vintage's finest include Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Dom Pérignon and Philipponnat Clos des Goisses.

Written Notes

One of the three single-parcel Pinot Noirs they started making in 2006. One in each of Mareuil, Aÿ, and the steepest, oldest part of Clos des Goisses, which this is. Disgorged March 2019. Michel Bettane apparently suggested a red wine from the central part of Clos des Goisses. This is the result. The usual potential alcohol is >12%! Dosage 4.5 g/l.
Very floral, rich and intense. Kerpow! Very dramatic. So rich.
