Parker: An awesome wine! Judged only by the unevolved, saturated, dense ruby/purple color, this 27-year old wine could easily be mistaken for a 2-year old claret. The nose offers up copious aromas of sweet, jammy, black plums, black-cherries, and cassis, as well as gorgeous, smoky, vanillin, floral, and licorice scents that tease the olfactory senses with the promise of considerable thrills. Extremely full-bodied, massively rich, and unctuous,...

The Story

Of the 1,000 hectares making up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, and there are 19 soil-types divided for management purposes into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the flow of the river Duero and the passage of time have been vital in forming these soils.

70 of these hectares are employed to produce Unico. A unique, magical estate which, along with extraordinary management of the vineyard, ...

Written Notes

The 1968 Vega Sicilia Unico was a nice way to end the evening. Its unique, leathery and kinky aromas and flavors showed off that edgy Tempranillo edge, but it was still so young and purple. This was an absolutely delicious wine, classic Vega and perhaps its finest vintage ever (96+).

Decanted two hours.  Dark, almost opaque black to the edge of the rim. Very closed at first. After two hours it opened with delicious concentration of blackfruit and a lot of mint, eucalyptus and peppery aromas. On the palate it was powerful yet stylish with plenty of depth. A long, rich, and spicy finish. We have high hopes that this 1968 will ultimately be almost as good as 1976

Moderately dark, ruby colour. Intense and charmingly complex nose with an abundance of aromas – blackcurrants, tobacco, smoke, dark chocolate, ripe dark fruit and farmyard aromas. A medium-bodied and elegant palate with moderate acidity, supple tannins and intense fruit with blackcurrant flavours. A long, refined and elegant finish. JL 94p

  • 94p

Savoury and restrained, this Unico is less sweet and expressive than the 1966 or the 1964. Closed and quite tightly wound with firm tannins and black tea leaves on the palate. Drinking well now. Drink 2014-2024 Alc 13.5%

Ruby, garnet rim. Liquorice, prunes, figs, evolved nose, leather, dark chocolate, bit leaner nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, softer tannins, fresh and elegant, red berries palate, nuanced and elegant, long finish. 93
