The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1959

Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s tasting notes :

A wine very much like those of this vintage, very big, matured colour. The heat during the summer made harmonious, sweet wines leaving plenty of multiple flavours on the palate. At the very end of the tasting, it starts showing its age. This wine has reached its zenith.

Vintage 1959

Bordeaux 1959 was proclaimed wine year of the century by overzealous journalists. Although it was a great year, it just wasn't the best year of the century. The year started with ideal weather conditions. The summer was perfect until the fall, when the rains arrived in mid-September. But the rains gave way to hot and dry weather, preparing a magnificent setting for the start of the harvest. The result was a truly ripe and juicy harvest. Reds a...

Written Notes

The 1959 La Mission was more chocolaty and rich with a decadent personality.  There was great acidity and superb spice in this incredible wine.  Its chocolate flavors dominated, and light gravel complemented.  This was a special wine woven in the finest cloth that Bordeaux has to offer (98).

The “vintage of the century” was foretold and named already before the harvest. After a few false starts, the wines have proved magnificent. It was very hot during harvesting, which started on 23 September and ended on 3 October at Château La Mission Haut-Brion. An excellent magnum. Decanted for two hours. Deep and clear red-brick colour, with aromas of sweet plum fruit, chocolate, blackcurrant, tobacco and meat. Very open and delicate nose. Very big and muscular La Mission style, similar to 1955 and 1950. It still has powerful tannins and many layers of sweet, velvety fruit flavours on the palate. Nicely balanced with quite low acidity. The finish is extremely long and silky. This 1959 may be the best vintage for drinking today and over the next 10 years.

Barely that extravagant as its big "brother", but there was plenty of wonderful ingredients. Very deep and intense on the nose and palate. Had an evident mark of Cabernet Sauvignon with mint, blackcurrants and leather. Incredibly refined on the palate. Aristocratic and terrifically delicious wine. Still has 10-12 years more life in it.

1959 La Mission Haut Brion: A gorgeous wine and my favourite La Mission. Youthful colour, great concentration of soft fruit. Complex and long finish. Will last forever but why wait? Decant ½ hour and give yourself time to see it grow in the glass.
