The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean Philippe Delmas, who's responsible for this property.

 

La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

A wine very much like those of this vintage, very big, matured colour. The heat during the summer made harmonious, sweet wines leaving plenty of multiple flavours on the palate. At the very end of the tasting, it starts showing its age. This wine has reached its zenith.

Vintage 1959

Bordeaux 1959 was proclaimed the wine year of the century by overzealous journalists. Even though it was an excellent year, it simply was not the best of the century. The year started off with ideal weather conditions. Summer was perfect all the way until the autumn, when the rains came in mid-September. But the rains made way for hot, dry weather, thus setting a magnificent stage for the start of the harvest.  The result was a truly ripe and juicy crop. The reds are typically full-bodied, with soft acidity and a fat mouthfeel that comes from the high alcohol content. Even though the vintage is generally compared to 1961, it has much in common with the 1949. The Sauternes vintage was equally a success and the region produced some very long-lived wines. Once again the Château Lafite-Rothschild achieved complete success, sharing the title of best wine of the vintage with the Haut-Brion. Right on their heels is the Pétrus, which should be decanted for at least three hours before drinking, and the La-Mission-Haut-Brion.

The next flight began with a 1959 La Mission Haut Brion. This was chocolate city in the nose, along with coffee, mocha and rye toast. Smokehouse, cedar and gravel rounded out its nose in classic fashion, but the palate was a bit askew. ‘Stewy’ came from The Inspector, and ‘VA’ from Big Boy, who continued to coo about the ‘so clean’ ’59 Lafite. This was a dirty birdie for sure, but there is a place for clean, and a place for dirty. The palate was definitely a touch stewy, but also chewy. Cereal came out with time, and it got better, but I have had better (94A).

The “vintage of the century” was foretold and named already before the harvest. After a few false starts, the wines have proved magnificent. It was very hot during harvesting, which started on 23 September and ended on 3 October at Château La Mission Haut-Brion. An excellent magnum. Decanted for two hours. Deep and clear red-brick colour, with aromas of sweet plum fruit, chocolate, blackcurrant, tobacco and meat. Very open and delicate nose. Very big and muscular La Mission style, similar to 1955 and 1950. It still has powerful tannins and many layers of sweet, velvety fruit flavours on the palate. Nicely balanced with quite low acidity. The finish is extremely long and silky. This 1959 may be the best vintage for drinking today and over the next 10 years.

Barely that extravagant as its big "brother", but there was plenty of wonderful ingredients. Very deep and intense on the nose and palate. Had an evident mark of Cabernet Sauvignon with mint, blackcurrants and leather. Incredibly refined on the palate. Aristocratic and terrifically delicious wine. Still has 10-12 years more life in it.
