The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean Philippe Delmas, who's responsible for this property.

La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

Wine Information

Château La Mission Haut-Brion
2004
Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s tasting notes :
The nose is extremely intense but has great precision. There is a great complexity dominated by notes of smoke, tobacco, and roasted coffee grains. Nevertheless the fruit is always present, red and fresh like freshly picked currants or cherries. In the mouth the wine is huge right at the start. The tannins are rounded and supple. The aroma is persistent and very long lasting. This wine has an excellent balance. La Mission Haut-Brion 2004 is a great seducer. To taste rather between now and 2020.

Weather conditions

Sum of temperatures : 3365 °C
Rain : 325 mm
Days where temperature above 30 °C : 21
Harvest : from 06/09/2004 to 06/10/2004

Current vintage notes
The year 2004 began with an extremely rainy month of January. In spite of this marked humid start up, the year 2004 in finis finale turned out to be short on the humidity factor. The flowering at the beginning of June took place under perfect climate conditions and was swift with a pleasing equilibrium. The August rain was for the most part concentrated during the last two weeks. As a result we decided to
remove some of the leaves covering the bunches on the vines. This maneuver enabled the harvesting of ripe and healthy grapes during the superb month of September. The picking of the white grapes began on September 6th and the red grapes on September 16th.

Written Notes

Tasted three times. Consistent notes. Contains 55% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. This was a very distinguished and sophisticated wine with silky tannins and silky texture. Great intensity and aroma of blueberry fruit. An exceptional piece of wine work. Good for keeping 20-25 years in the cellar.

Ruby, garnet rim. Richer nose, subdued perfumed notes behind Pessac- minerals, cassis and coffe notes. Fresh acidity, towards high of ripe tannins. Elegant would be pulling it but has a charm in its youthful roughness. Very long but needs another decade in the cellar.
