The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean...

Vintage 1975

Bordeaux: After four miserable vintages came the hot vintage of 1975 which briefly put Bordeaux wines in the spotlight once again. The unstable temperature of September turned into good weather for the harvest. The grapes were high in sugar, but many reds, especially those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, lacked phenolic ripeness. This resulted in masculine and even aggressive reds with austere and even harsh tannins.

A fine-looking bottle. Level by the neck. Decanted for two hours. Surprisingly mature wine, colour looked very dark but old. Glorious perfumed nose of undergrowth, very dark flavours like earth, tobacco, vanilla and mushrooms. Big and blooming on the palate: coconut and prune. Superb balance of sweet, big tannin and acid. Massive finish and a glorious structure. Excellent grip. The well-structured finish lingered on for a very long time. Still a lifetime to live.

The 1975 La Mission Haut Brion brought more plums to the party, along with more honey. Its nose was quite open with vanilla soda aromas, and its palate was lush and creamy, but it was definitely in third place. I have recently found this vintage on more than one occasion to be maturing and not as thrilling as it was a few years back. That being said, it was still outstanding (95).

This is undisputably the wine of the vintage, a year that was clearly over-exposed and over-rated, largely because it was better than the four vintages that preceded it...The 1975 La Mission-Haut-Brion, which consistently received perfect scores in its first thirty years of life, remains a vibrant, vital wine... (and) possesses enough evidence of greatness to stand alone as the finest 1975... a blockbuster for its first 20-30 years of life. While much of the fat has faded away, the wine still possesses a vitality and vigor that belies its 37 years of age. The color is a dark garnet with just a touch of lightening at the rim. Notes of camphor, wood charcoal, black fruits, plums, cedar, damp earth, truffles, asphalt and smoke result in a fabulous set of aromatics that are nothing short of compelling. Based on the aromatics alone, this offering would merit a perfect score, but some of the nasty tannins in this vintage are beginning to make their presence known on the palate. Nevertheless, this is a freak for the year - very concentrated, dense and remarkably youthful. It will undoubtedly provide extraordinary drinking for another 30-50 years. Nothing about this wine indicates it can't keep going, although its one-time perfection has faded ever so slightly. This amazing effort is a truly profound wine in another disastrous vintage in Bordeaux!

Deep developing colour. The nose is stylish with leather, dark berries and roasted complexity of aromas. The palate is extremely fine and harmonious. Tannins are admittably very firming, but there is enough fruit to match up. This balanced and pleasurable wine is at a great age for drinking today. But it has the structure to keep at least for another 10 years.
