The 1989 Lafleur, tasted side by side with the 1990 on two occasions in 2002, plays it closer to the vest. The wine needs far more coaxing to produce the licorice, black cherry liqueur, earth, and truffle notes from the nose. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, tannic, backward, and very tightly knit, with mouth-searing levels of tannin and extremely high extract. The tannins are firmer, the fruit seemingly less sweet, but still extremely r...

The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Wine Information

1989 Château Lafleur (Pomerol)
For many people Lafleur is the only wine in Pomerol that has both the excellence and capability of Château Petrus. There are only four and a half hectares of vines, planted in 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, which are an average of 35 years of age.

Vintage 1989

Bordeaux: The 2nd in a trio of great vintages and which produced a large harvest of ripe, rich and fleshy wines which generally possess soft, silky tannins, accompanied by a high alcohol level. It was the hottest summer since 1949 and the harvest began on August 28, the earliest since 1893. The grapes were harvested in dry conditions, the only concern being that some acidity levels were low, which which has led to suggestions that some wines w...

Written Notes

I have always loved the 1989 Lafleur, which struck me like the modern day ’61 but even stronger.  This is an undervalued wine in the marketplace.  There was lots of oil and alcohol, enough for a Russian bachelor party lol.   There was a flash of jam in this monster wine.  Intense, super stuff (98).

Perhaps, I am short-changing this wine, or at least this bottle, as it could deserve 100 Pts. This is simply majestic. The incredible wealth of cherries, plums, truffles, dried flowers, dried red pit fruits, thyme, and chocolate is almost overwhelming. The palate is intense, full-bodied, powerful, vibrant, and energetic, the fruits are perfect as is just about everything about this wine. Drink from 2023-2040.

Tasted in September 2012. Very intense and robust. Loads of superbly ripe fruit, kirsch liqueur, truffles and great depth on the palate. Wonderful structure and length. Exceptional wine.
