The Story

The Léglise family from Libourne founded what is now Château L’Evangile. They were actively involved, around the middle of the 18th century, in building the Pomerol vineyard. L’Evangile appeared in the 1741 land registry under the name of Fazilleau.

At the turn of the 19th century, the estate already had much of its current configuration, stretching over some 13 hectares, when it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert. He renamed the estate “L...

Vintage 2017

This year, the frost forced us to carry out extraordinary selection within the plots, meticulously marking the vines affected by frost and those that had been spared, and this continued until the harvest, which required intricate sorting. A classic maceration of 30 days and promising blends in January have confirmed our impressions of a vintage with balance between great aromatic freshness, quality of tannins and length.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is ruby red, and looking clear and youthful. On the nose it is open and complex. The taste is fresh, fruity, and dry, warming, with medium tannin, with hard tannins, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with well-structured structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has cranberry, chocolate, mineral, coffee, plum and toasty flavours. The finish is long and spicy. This wine is excellent. I paid around 200-500€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 30min before tasting. Too expensive for quality. I do recommend.

First vintage with Merlot only. Ruby. Blueberries, anise, scented, detailed, nuanced, floral, faint minerals, denser nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe, rich, fruity, blackberries, rich and intense, smooth texture, velvety, bit of alcohol warmth, long. 14,6 alcohol. Going towards biodynamic growing. 94-96

A wine with 100% Merlot with a dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Excellent fruit, blackberries, black cherries, discreet hints of vanilla, gingerbread spices, hints of violets in the background. On the palate mature tannins, wonderful sweet fruit, excellent length with lingering mild spices and liquorice. A great wine with depth and wonderful tension creating a real class. 98

Inside Information

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2017 L'Evangile is deep garnet-purple in color, featuring a profoundly scented nose of plum preserves, smoked meats, chargrill and cigar box with touches of licorice, tapenade, tar and truffles plus an earthy waft of underbrush. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a lovely purity of black and blue fruits, accented with baking spice notions and framed by plush tannins that offer just the right amount of provocative grip, finishing long and earthy.
