The Story

Château Lynch-Bages is one of those legendary estates that basically defined the stellar reputation of Pauillac. Sitting proudly on the "Bages" plateau—a prime, gravelly ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary—this property has serious history. It all kicked off in the 17th century with Thomas Lynch, an Irish-born Bordeaux merchant, and stayed in the family until 1824 back when it was just known as "Lynch cru." By 1855, its quality was undeniabl...

1990 Vintage

Blend:
73% Cabernet Sauvignon
15% Merlot
10% Cabernet Franc
2% Petit Verdot

The third in a trio of superlative Bordeaux vintages, and now widely regarded as one of the finest post-war vintages. July and August were the driest since 1928. Heavy rain at the end of August was just what was required and September was relatively cool but dry, resulting in perfect harvest conditions. What marks the 1990's out are their ripenes...

Vintage 1990

Early, uniform flowering, a hot but unspectacular summer and an exceptionally hot period at the end of August 1990 and the first half of September. It was this heat that allowed the record harvest not only to fully ripen, but also to concentrate the fruit. Harvesting began on September 14 and was completed before the start of heavy rains on October 2. Another reason for the success of the vintage was that most châteaux had invested in their ce...

Written Notes

The 1990 Lynch Bages was all about the coffee as well, more grinds than fresh brew. There was a powdery edge to the nose, and hints of animal and green bean lingered. The palate was rich, but the finish was softer, especially once I considered what it was later on. There was a touch of a synthetic quality to its flavors, and it was exotic in its cinnamon and cedar (93).

(4.7 g/l total acidity; 13% alcohol): Dark ruby-red with a garnet edge. Initially inexpressive nose opens with aeration to reveal aromas of red fruits, flowers, tar and minerals. Sweet on entry, with flavors of red cherry syrup, vanilla and milk chocolate, then develops a delicate animal nuance with air. The long finish features persistent notes of tobacco and kirsch. Typically seductive Lynch-Bages, and quite opulent in texture.

  • 93p
Ruby with garnet rim. Plums, sweet tobacco, rich nose. Rich palate as well, good acidity, ripe tannins, feels simple minded and straight-forward, less layered, lesscomplex. But has a good length, but quite boring compared to the 96 by it's side.
