The Story

Pontet-Canet has always been a legendary Médoc. It is deep ruby-red, crimson, and sometimes almost black colour and has a characteristic bouquet of black fruit (especially blackcurrant), liquorice, and prune as well as fig, cedar, and sometimes cocoa overtones. Pontet-Canet combines power and elegance, as well as concentration and fullness on the palate. Rather sinewy in style, Pontet-Canet is clearly a classical wine with a tannic structure t...

Vintage 1889

BordeauxHarvest started September 29th. An abundant year in terms of yield, with wines that were of reasonable quality. A Christmas Tree was decorated for the first time at the White House under President Benjamin Harrison, and the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated in Paris, with 10,000 gas street lamps lit across the steeple and platforms.

Written Notes

 Ruby, thin brick rim.
Red berries, cassis, dark fruits, liquorice, tobacco, nuanced, not that intense.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, structured, leaner bodied, starting to dry out. Feels more structured than it really is.

  • 92p

Bright mahogany colour with slightly brick red hue. Opulent nose with prunes and dried figs, balmy spices, vanilla, cloves, and hints of cinnamon. A whiff of candied violets and cocoa powder in the background. Hints of tobacco and cedar wood. On the palate distinct acidity, fine tannins, balmy spices and hints of dried fruits. Well-structured with excellent length.

  • 96p

Moderately deep tile red colour. Refined nose reveals hints of smokiness, cassis, some herbacousness, cigar box and very classic bordeaux style. Medium-bodied palate has lovely mineral and vibrantly fresh mouthfeel with lean and pungent finish. Surprisingly good for its age. – JL 94p (Aug 2023)
