The Story

Ann Colgin’s wines stand out as one of the most refined styles of wines produced in Napa Valley. They show distinctive purity of the ripe black fruits, refined tannin structure and extremely elegant flavor profiles. This wine makes no exception. The hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the Herb Lamb Vineyard, has been the hallmark wine of Colgin Cellars from its debut in 1992.

Ripe black cherry, cola, blackberry, vanilla and earth. Dense and chewy on the palate with delicious mouthwatering acids and a 60 second plus finish. This wine has yet to reach its peak. Drink now or through 2020. Service: Serve straight from the bottle, with care to avoid stirring up the precipitates.

Written Notes

Fine-lookingbottle. Decanted two and ahalf hours. Almost black in colour. On the nose very open and intense with hints of spice, pepper, currant, plum,and wild berry aromasand smooth new oak. So full-bodied and commanding that one tends to think of it as concentrated, but maintaining a sense of well-balanced elegance and finesse. Still powerful tannins tend to hide the black cherry, mocha-vanilla and mineral flavours. The finish is well-balanced, distinctive, chewy, immense,and very flavourful.

The next wine caused Justin to comment that this was the .first blockbuster.. I saw it, as the wine was very aromatic in that showboat, opulent, banana split style that made me think Bryant or Colgin. The wine was very lush on the palate, smooth, elegantly long and fine. The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb is a bit juicier and more overt than the 1997 tasted alongside it in this flight. Forward, juicy and supple, but not at all over the top, the 1995 is a gorgeous wine from this late-ripening site on Howell Mountain. At twenty years of age, the 1995 Herb Lamb is fabulous. Its only real fault is following the 1997 in this tasting.

Deep ruby. Black raspberry, cassis, minerals and toffee on the nose. A big wine with impressive palate presence and sweetness; silky but very firmly built, thanks to vibrant acidity. Very long on the palate. Will require at least five or six years of bottle aging. Very strong for the vintage.

The equilibrium between the wines' component parts - new oak, alcohol, tannin, acidity, and extract - is right on, with nothing out of place. The 1996 and 1995 could be mistaken for identical twins, although close examination reveals that the 1995 has a slightly firmer tannic edge, and the 1996 slightly lower acidity. However, both possess Colgin's tell-tale opaque black/purple color, phenomenal aromatics consisting of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cassis, subtle new oak, and a notion of floral scents (is it acacia or lilac?). In the mouth, both wines are full-bodied, remarkably supple and opulent, with a purity and presence of fruit that must be tasted to be believed. Their finishes last for 45+ seconds. I suspect each of these wines will get even better over the next 5-10 years before reaching their full plateau of maturity, where they should remain for two decades or more. They are the quintessential examples of Cabernet Sauvignons that marry power with elegance.

A beautiful nose of roasted herbs and a hint of meat with velvety tannins. This is a savory wine with layers of flavors that range from blackberry and spices such as nutmeg to rosemary and thyme. Youthful and fresh even after 20 years of age with a good acid backbone. What impressed me most about this wine was how it became better in the glass over a 3-hour period. At its peak, but with decades of cellaring life ahead.
