Vintage 2019

The 2019 growing season paralleled the moderate season of 2018, with several, key elements distinguishing it both at the beginning and the end. An abundance of rainfall came in the winter of 2019 and continued into early May. Vines thrived under such verdant growing conditions. Enhancing the airflow of the vine by spacing out the shoots and adjusting leaves in the late spring was an important yet laborious element for success in 2019. Nature y...

The nose is a mesmerizing blend of aromas that captivate the senses. It opens with an explosion of ripe dark fruits, with luscious blackberries, black currants, and cassis taking center stage. Subtle nuances of vanilla, cedar, and dark chocolate from oak aging add depth and complexity.

On the palate, Colgin Tychson Hill 2019 continues to impress with its remarkable depth and balance. It is a full-bodied wine that seamlessly integrates its flavors. The 2019 “Tychson Hill” exhibits a poetic balance of lively aromatics and minerality that is undeniably compelling. Centered around classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavors, the wine demonstrates a perfect pirouette of dark red berries, cherry pit, melting chocolate, and graphite. Suave layers of silken tannin unfold on the palate, yielding a finish both subtly sweet and savory. Full of textural density though never heavy, the 2019 “Tychson Hill” dances across the palate.

Nature yielded vines with an abundant crop, a result of the extra soil moisture and nutrients. We adjusted crop size using strict criteria for cluster thinning to bring the vines into balance.

A peaceful summer ensued, leading us into ideal ripening conditions throughout September. In early October, a sequence of very cold nights downshifted the pace of ripening, just as the days were shortening. Harvest took place during the middle two weeks of October. The cold nights and cooler days captured freshness, infusing intensity of both flavor and perfume into the wines. Seamless tannins and a strikingly gliding texture define the wines of the 2019 vintage. Though not lacking for structure, the wines are complete in their youth, making for undeniable, immediate enjoyment. Patience in the cellar will only highlight their soaring aromatics, as the palpable fruit integrates with the more subtle savory character.

Fabulous aromas of crushed fruit and stone fruit, such as peaches, together with currants and more currants. Full-bodied with polished tannins that give a cashmere-like texture that holds the wine together with succulence and freshness, as well as formed fleshiness. Vibrant. Hints of graphite and lead pencil to the fruit at the end. Drinkable now, but will age so beautifully.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is a supremely elegant wine that marries intensity, richness and vibrancy. All the best elements of this St. Helena site come together in a statuesque Cabernet that dazzles right out of the gate. Bright red-toned fruit, spice and lifted floral accents develop in the glass. The 2019 is naturally quite young, but it has a great future. In recent years, the Tychson Hill has shown more finesse in its tannins as a young wine than in the past, which means it needs less cellaring, never a bad thing. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out the blend.
