The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

The Masseto vineyard is a unique place. Blessed with the generosity of a...

Wine Information

Masseto Climate and Harvest 2000

Winter was generally warmer than in 1999. A homogeneous budbreak occurred during the first days of April, under some rain. Spring evolved with average temperatures and sunny days. Flowering was completed uniformly by mid May. Thanks to the rain that had taken place early in spring, initial fruit formation was above the previous year. The weather was very sunny with no rains and temperatures well above the av...

Written Notes

Medium intense, ruby colour. A round, intense and opulent nose pleases with spicy, chocolaty and toasty aromas. The full-bodied palate shows a fine harmony of ripe, intense dark fruits, moderate acidity and firm, powdery tannins. Rich earthy aromas mid-palate with leather and cherry liqueur express evolvement. The high level of alcohol guarantees a long, warming finish

The 2000 Masseto is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Plum, blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice and spice infuse the 2000 with striking layers of nuance to play off its exotic, unctuous feel. Stylistically, the 2000 is very much on the extroverted side of things, although it does not have the spherical build of the very best Massetos. The growing season was marked by mostly warm, dry weather and an slightly early harvest that started at the end of August and wrapped up around the middle of September.

A clear, medium-intensity and ruby red colour. A large, giving nose, with hints of chocolate, spices and toast. Full-bodied, juicy mouthfeel, with balanced acids and stout, fine tannins. Intensive ripe cherry fruitiness accompanied by earthy aromas – leather and spices. The high alcohol punches through in the finish. On the whole, a tasty, balanced wine, which can be drunk right now, but will continue to mature for a few more years.
