The Story

Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Written Notes

Characterised by a long, regular vegetative cycle with no particular climatic accidents. As the start of picking (September 19th) approached, the weather remained sunny and cool, ensuring the slow ripening of the grapes while preserving a remarkable level of acidity.
Harvest: Baumé 9°3 GL – Total acidity 9.5 g/l H2SO4 – S/A 16.5
Chardonnay: Baumé 9°5 GL – Total acidity 9.2 g/l H2SO4
Declared yield: 9,655 kg/ha
Assemblage: 100% Chardonnay Grand Cru, 54% from the Côte des Blancs and 46% from the Montagne de Reims. Disgorged Sep 1997
Deep gold. Hint of linseed oil on the, interesting, nose. Very evolved and fully unwound, even slightly sweet on the finish – though with lovely briskness and acidity. A bit earthbound. Although it has admirable persistence and sore throat soothing qualities. Tight bead and very well balanced. Perhaps the ideal vintage to drink in 2009?
