The Wine Spectator number 1 Wine of 2018 is Sassicaia 2015

Sassicaia, like many of the best things in life, began as an experiment, a passion project that came to fruition thanks to good fortune and hard work.

The wine began in the 1940s as a homemade red crafted by a curious Renaissance man trying to emulate Bordeaux on his Bolgheri estate near the Tuscan coast. It became the prototype of the nascent Bolgheri region, inspiring many othe...

The Story

After almost 30 years of experimentation and solid work the Marquis decided to release Sassicaia´s 1968 vintage to the open market using his cousin´s, Antinori´s distribution network in the early 1970s, with instant sensation. At a Decanter tasting of Cabernet wines in London, 1978, Sassicaia from vintage 1972 beat all the other 33 wines of France and California, and since then Sassicaia has been one of the leading wines in the world and in gr...

Wine Information

Always exciting to taste this icon wine on release, none more so than in block buster quality years like 2015. First bottled commercially in 1968, this 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc blend comes from vineyards at 100 to 400 metres altitude, planted in soils rich in limestone and clay. The aromatics are instantly noticeable for their deeper, darker, riper, broodier fruit profile. Fairly closed and tight on opening, the perfume is a ...

Written Notes

This vintage was recognized by the American wine magazine Wine Spectator, giving it the Number One Wine of the Year Award. This created a little controversy, not least on an Italian site, Doctorwine run by Daniele Cernilli, who was rather miffed – actually extremely grumpy – at all the attention created by Wine Spectator when Doctorwine had previously given it its top award and it had not attracted similar attention.

For me, the Sassicaia was brilliantly concentrated and balanced, with great length. A regal wine with warm earth, dark berries, chocolate, coffee bean, and blackberry flavors. The tannins were firm and powerful, but the length is what really stood out. A wine for the long haul. For me, 97.

Love the aromas to this young red with blackcurrants, sage, cinnamon and five-spice character. Changes all the time. Full-bodied, dense and powerful with a ripe and rich tannin backbone that gives form and beauty to the ripe and beautiful fruit. Tight and very long. Approachable now but will reward more in five to six years. A classic Sassicaia.

Ruby. Cassis, blackberries, vanilla, spices, nuanced and detailed, intense nose, layers upon layers, coffee, graphite. Complex. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, anise, cassis, some spices, liquorice, blackberries, cassis, detailed, just goes on and on and on. Black tea, stunning length. Starting to show ever more of its nuances. Is this the best vintage since 1985 for this? 98

Sassicaia 2015 DV 19.5  Straight away, this stellar Sassicaia opens up on the palate, showing signs of this vintage’s hot summer with notes of exuberant fruits. This is a very vibrant and flamboyant vintage for Sassicaia; however, it retains its classic Mediterranean personality – through its majestic structure, refined tannins, brilliant texture and herbal notes. While this may be ever so tempting to enjoy young, do not be afraid to cellar this baby. A great vintage, like this 2015, will never let you down! Drinking window: 2022-2050.

Inside Information

98 Points - Decanter: "This is certainly an exceptional Sassicaia, with a sumptuous nose of ripe, creamy black and red fruit with cedar and spice notes. The colour is by no means dark (as is often the case with Sassicaia), and the impression on the palate is one of controlled power underpinned by gorgeous sweetness and flowing elegance. This is a very confident wine with real authority and presence, beginning with a magnificent attack of rich cassis and ripe griotte cherry followed by cigar box and leather notes, and a long finish of savoury bay leaf and minerals. It's deceptively structured, the tannins wonderfully ripe, creamy and finely textured, while the juicy acidity also suggests that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. This 2015 exhibits everything that you'd want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir-faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. It is unarguably stunning." 2/18
