The Story

With an annual production of 10,000 bottles a year, Y (pronounced "ee-grek" in French) is a rare wine. It is made from the same outstanding terroir and the same vines as Château d'Yquem. Although work in the vineyard is every bit as meticulous, the grapes are picked and the wine made in a different way.

In 1959 Yquem introduced a dry white wine – “Y” (pronounced “e-grec” in French). “Y” comes from the same exceptional terroir and vines as Yquem´s legendary sweet wine. It benefits from identical strict vine growing methods, but is harvested and made differently. “Y” is made from a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Sémillon. “Y” is produced when a conscious decision is made to pick certain plots of Sauvignon Blanc grapes at the beginning of the vintage and overripe Sémillon grapes afterwards. This accounts for small quantities and irregular production. Because of the cost of tiny production – around 2500 cases – it is always moderately high-priced wine. There have only been twenty-one vintages of “Y” since 1959. “Y” is normally a full and forceful wine and because of that it is an ideal match for food, especially for seafood and foie gras. For my belief, “Y” is a very high-quality and out of the ordinary dry white wine with great ageing potential up to 100 years. This 1961 was in perfect condition. Level was by the neck. Decanted for 30 minutes. Medium-gold, fine and fresh color. Round, oak and vanilla nose. Heavy and well balanced. In the mouth the wine was still quite tight, but all the elements of good concentration, nice noble rot fruit and firm structure were there - just decant the wine a few hours before tasting and wait. Your patience will be rewarded with this very long and complex, curious and most interesting wine.
