The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

Protected by kings

Château d’Yquem’s first harvest took place three hundred years earlier, in 1593, when Jacques de Sauvage purchased the estate from the crown. When Francoise de Sauvage and Louis Amade Lur-Saluces, king Louis XV’s godson, married in 1785, Yquem became part of the property of the historic and traditional Lur-Saluces family. At the same time, the vineyard received approval and protection from the French royalty. Today, the v...

Vintage 1953

The 1953 become the first top vintage of the 1950s. The year ended up to be an excellent one, even though the heavy rains of September threatened to destroy a good year. The hot, dry summer was crowned by a perfect August. The mercury rose above 30°C on more than half of the days in August. Fortunately, the rains that came in mid-September made way for ideal harvest conditions at the beginning of October. The finest wines of this vintage are u...

Written Notes

The 1953 d’Yquem was a bit weird with aromas of hay, animal, stable and almost some paint thinner. There was some alley and wet dog here, and this was my least favorite of the day so far. I even found alligator action, and that’s not a good thing. I couldn’t help but wonder if it was the bottle or the vintage (88?).

Light mahogany. It had intense nose of vanilla budding with added rum and walnuts, and was delicious on the palate with tropic fruits marinated in honey. All ingredients appeared to be in perfect match. This was eminent wine with beautiful charisma, to be further enjoyed in the next 10-15 years.

D 45 min / G 1.5 h Amber golden colour. Moderately intense, slightly oxidized nose with crème brûlée, cloudberry, apricot marmelade, and honey aromas. Medium-sweet palate , moderate acidity, firm mineral character with botrytis aromas. Long and elegant finish.

Inside Information

"The quality of 1953 Yquem owes much to a first and very fine late pass. Picking was cut short by rain but, fortunately, the first half of the crop yielded a truly beautiful Yquem that is fairly atypical and not very sweet."
