Wine Information

Dry, but not excessively hot weather was the pattern throughout the growing season. Rain in mid-September called for going through the vines to remove any berries affected by sour rot. The regular harvest started on the 29th of September and lasted 23 days – a dream harvest without rain and or any interruptions! The crop was greater than average, producing very rich, exceedingly elegant wines thanks to the pure botrytis.

When the New York Stock Exchange crashed, its impact could be felt in France's economy throughout the 1930s. In 1933 the number of people unemployed was a staggering 1,300,000. By 1935 production had declined 20%, stock value 33% and dividends 60%. Even agricultural yields had declined by a third. In 1937 French exports had fallen over 50%, which only served to increase the fears of winemakers, who had already suffered from poor vintages for the entire 1930s. A small ray of light amidst all this despair shone upon the vintners of Sauternes by this magnificent vintage. The year was warm and dry. The Yquem is a perfect example of the outstanding crop harvested in Sauternes. The bottle we opened had been in my cellar for over ten years and it was still in pristine condition. Decanted for 30 minutes, let breathe in the glass for approximately 30 minutes. The wine’s bright, gilded colour provided a welcome change of pace after so many reds. Extremely fat, full-bodied, with a sweet nose. Strong honey overtones, lively and seductive flavour, which left a pleasantly soft and long-lasting aftertaste on the palate. On the whole, however, perhaps a bit too simple and one-dimensional as a wine. An Yquem with such a wonderful vintage should be more challenging and have a more complex structure. Balanced and well-mannered, but not a glorious bottle!

Château d'Yquem 1937 / From the 4.5-liter bottle: Wow, what a difference compared to the standard 0.75-liter bottle, and even that one is already a milestone. Elegance, complexity, and depth in dimensions previously unknown (Star Trek sends its regards). The array of classic aromas that emerges here can certainly be considered a benchmark for a Sauternes. However, it is not a typical Sauternes; with its delicate and velvety flavor nuances, it resembles more of a highly refined Climens, or rather, a Barsac. Finest notes of vanilla-caramel-biscuit with a hint of bitter orange zest and dried figs. A perfectly balanced sweetness and still wonderfully youthful freshness with an almost never-ending length on the finish. Perfection squared. NB: Although on the same level, the 1937 in this form cannot be compared with the Yquems of 1921 and 1929; the latter represent perfect opulence, while the 1937 shows perfect elegance.

Deep brown-orange color with a palate that is bordering on caramel with layers of dried flowers, toffee and mango tart. There is still amazing acid backbone and an intense energy to this wine that is nearly 80 years old. What a spectacular Yquem, still exhibiting its full spendor.

eParker 96 points / Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1937 Chateau d’Yquem was made in a year when there was a severe drought in Sauternes, though the crop was harvested between September 21 and November 3, the heart of the crop was picked during a warm dry spell between October 1-21. It is a legendary wine, but on this occasion it was easily surpassed. Having said that, winemaker Sandrine Garbay mentioned that this was not the best bottle and that on its day it can rank alongside the 1945. On any other day, this would have been the wine of the tasting. It has a deep mahogany color. The nose gently unfurls in the glass with scents of orange rind, mandarin, honeysuckle and melted candle wax. The palate is linear and correct on the entry and certainly gives notice of an immensely powerful Yquem, even if this bottle does not possess the delineation and tension of the 1945. This particular bottle might suggest that the 1937 is past its lofty peak, although there is enough here to suggest that the next might deliver nirvana. Drink now-2025+. Tasted March 2014.
