The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

Protected by kings

Château d’Yquem’s first harvest took place three hundred years earlier, in 1593, when Jacques de Sauvage purchased the estate from the crown. When Francoise de Sauvage and Louis Amade Lur-Saluces, king Louis XV’s godson, married in 1785, Yquem became part of the property of the historic and traditional Lur-Saluces family. At the same time, the vineyard received approval and protection from the French royalty. Today, the v...

Vintage 1971

Bordeaux: 1971 was a very good vintage, the only fault of which was being overshadowed by the exceptional 1970 vintage. The size of the 1971 vintage harvest was very small, which made the wines a rarity. Well-stored examples of wine are likely to remain mature for a few more years. Sauternes and Barsac: Sweet wines such as Sauternes and Barsac have been exceptional this year and will last for many decades to come.

Written Notes

The 1975 was a tough act to follow, but the 1971 d’Yquem gave it a good college try. I thought for a second it was corked, but it wasn’t. There were aromas of wintergreen and bacon, and its palate was rich and oily, sweet and bordering on great. It was a touch dirty on its finish, but sometimes I like a dirty finish (94).

Golden brown. This wine was very intense and deep in the nose. On the palate, it had aroma of walnut cream and crème brulée containing a pinch of rum. Sophisticated with big depth and length, delicious fruit sweetness, tasty and captivating wine, which still can entertain. Additional 10-15 years.
