The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Vintage 2018

2018 Bordeaux Vintage Report and recommendations

by Andrew Caillard MW

2018 is an exceptional year. The Bordeaux whites and sauternes are very good, but from an Australian perspective the excitement is all in the red wines. All sub regions produced examples of really good wines, but some performed better than others. Generally the very top estates made exemplary wines illustrating that the human factor and wealth can have a major impact ...

Written Notes

Yquem - 85% Semillon + 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Rich and fat with great structure and big intensity. Creamy and multilayered. Loads of everything. Very, very long honeyed finish. It's amazing stuff! 97p.

A formidable modern interpretation of Château d'Yquem showing a bright golden colour. The nose is complex and rich with aroma reminiscent of ripe apricots, tangerine zest, tropical fruit e.g. passion fruit and papaya, fine flowery components discreetly reminiscent of white roses and hints of ginger in the background. On the palate well balanced with precision and freshness, fine fruit, again apricots, citrus fruit and hints of tropical fruits, elegant with charming character and very convincing length. Although it is not the most powerful Yquem it is extremely multi-layered and already today pure temptation.

Inside Information

"The nose is beautifully racy, elegant and offers a small minerality as well as a fine grain. It reveals notes of fresh kumquat, small ripe citrus and small notes of fresh William pear associated with fine touches of crunchy apple, flowers, very fine almond notes, toasted as well as a discreet hint of vanilla. The palate is fruity, fresh, well-balanced and offers a beautiful definition, precision, a beautiful finesse of the grain, complexity, a beautiful aerial side, a beautiful matter (full of finesse just like “silk”), richness (full of finesse and control), elegance as well as a beautiful freshness. On the palate this wine expresses notes of crystallized lemon, crystallized mandarine, small notes of fleshy vine peach associated with touches of candied citrus, roasted/ripe pineapple as well as small discreet touches of apricot/apricot flowers, lemon flowers, almond and a discreet toasted hint. Good length. There are very fine hints of toasted almond/toasted hazelnut on the persistence."
