The first and the best Château d'Yquem 1967

The 1967 vintage of Château d'Yquem will be written in history as the first and one of the best vintages of Comte Alexandre de Lur Saluces. He could not have hoped for a better starting point. The year was very rewarding in the Sauternes region. The cool spring initially delayed the blooming of the vines, but the hot and exceptionally dry summer accelerated the growth so much that not even the col...

The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

A vintage with fine weather: a beautiful dry hot summer and a very successful first pass from 26/9 to 3/10, accompanied by a few scattered showers. Picking started up again on 9/10. Temperatures were high, including at night, which was conducive to perfect botrytis. The harvest ended on 26/10. The grapes were very ripe and extremely concentrated. The wine has a subtle balance and is a benchmark vintage for the 1960s and 70s.

Written Notes

Last and certainly not least in this flight was the legendary 1967 d’Yquem. Bipin remarked after one smell, ‘Yquem is Yquem.’ It had the most complex and exotic nose, honeyed of course, but also possessed marzipan, grilled nuts, crème brulee and musk. Its long and delicious palate was full of apricot, nut and apple flavors. Bipin continued that it was ‘very round like a Pomerol.’ It was clearly ahead of the pack, seemingly mature but still possessing hidden acidity. Candle wax flavors emerged in this very fine and slinky Yquem. Charles Chevalier commented how 2007 was going to be a great Sauternes year, by the way

Fill bottom neck, very deep, almost amber colour with cognac hue. (picture is darker than actual colour because of lighting in the room) Caramel, botrytis, apricots, burnt banana, even slightly salty like a rainy seaside morning. Also raisins, ripe grapes, but caramel overshadows a bit. The acidity is pure perfection, so fres and lively, cleansing and pure, intense wine, big somehow, a touch of citrus to refreshen. Fantastic wine, the length is superb, great but still slightly dissapointing. After one hour, more subtle and elegant, even better balance, caramel not so show off and dried apricots and raisins. 95-96

Consistent notes. This vintage ranks as one of the very best vintages in the history of the district. Golden brown with reddish nuances. Already in the nose, you could sense incredible intensity and depth with exceedingly sublime botrytis. It was incredibly sophisticated wine with extremely brilliant structure and wonderful balance, packed with sweet apricots, peaches and honey melon on the palate, and with honey-like texture. Aftertaste lasted for several minutes. It was simply pure perfectionism. This wine has potential to last for minimum 25 more years.

Golden colour. Developed nose shows orange peel, smokiness, and cinnamon aromas. A concentrated palate with medium-sweet style and moderate level of acidity. Long and intense finish with apricot marmelade and long finish. Great concentration, promising wine.
