The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. Vintage 1961

Australia / A hot, dry year with growing season rainfall well below average (despite a wet April), 1961 produced some very good red wines.

Kaiser Stuhl introduced a hermetically sealed continuous centrifuge, the first large automatic desludging centrifuge.

Hermann Paul Leopold (Leo) Buring died aged 86. Leo Buring Holdings Ltd (a public company) was taken over by Lindeman Holdings the following year.

Written Notes

Medium colour. Fresh developed crème brulée, hint marzipan, polished leather, wood varnish, hint cork wood aromas. Well concentrated slightly cork wood flavoured with developed red berry, earthy, marzipan, milk chocolate, flavours, fine slinky, hint al dente textures, attractive mid palate viscosity and fresh integrated mineral torque. Finishes chalky and long. Still drinking well. Drink now- soon. 94 points

1960 wasn't made; too much drought (a bit like 2013!). Bright mature ruby. Not especially intense colour. Nor nose. Sweet and fully evolved. Sweet fruited with a hint of strawberry jam. Very sweet indeed on the palate with some treacle. Lively! Pretty high VA but lots of fun. Very refreshing finish with just a little dry dustiness.
