The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. Henschke Hill of Grace 2006 / Part of the package deal, the ’05 and ’06 have long tussled for supremacy but on this occasion, 2006 ruled. Black cherry notes, plum pudding, dry herbs and spices. This is complex, classically structured, concentrated, offering underlying power and finishing with cashmere-like tannins. Glorious and still offering refinement. This is a brilliant wine by any standards. On this evidence, it will even outlive the 2005. Now for 40 years.  99p

“Excellent colour; this is living up to the promise it had when first tasted in Mar ’10; this is still incredibly youthful, its black fruits heightened rather than threatened by the firm tannins on the finish. With the advantage of hindsight, the initial drink-to date of ’26 can be taken out to ’46. The screwcap was a game changer from the outset, but has particular importance for great vintages like this. Drink to 2046.”

Pleasing for its richness, elegance and finesse, this graceful red presents a delicate mix of dark berry, licorice, light cedar and loamy earth, gliding along on the finish, where the wine is amazingly polished.

The 2006 vintage shaped up as another high quality year but with only average yields in the Eden Valley. After a late break in mid June 2005, winter and spring rains were some of the best for years in the lead-up to flowering in early summer. Some varieties such as riesling and shiraz suffered more than others from poor set, leading to ‘hen and chicken’. While there was some damage in Eden Valley from frost, this had only minor impact on the overall yield; however, yields in most varieties were down by 15-20%. The summer was mild with southerly winds, reminiscent of 2002. Brief heat waves occurred in late January and mid February but were early enough not to affect quality, with only minor sunburn on exposed fruit. Whites were nearly all picked by the end of March, an unusual situation.
