The Story

Our Chardonnay is a top quality wine with great character traits. The wine originates from a mini-plot on the best slope and is produced only in very small amounts. The absolute attention to detail and meticulous screening and selection make this Chardonnay extremely distinctive. Proximity to the sea and the cool nights lend this wine its uniqueness and a suggestion of finesse worthy of a Burgundy.

Monteverro Chardonnay is bursting with sweet aromas of pear, honey, vanilla, apricot, and white chocolate. It is balanced by mild notes of white truffles and roasted nuts. The first sips are fresh revealing enticing stone fruit and citrus flavors of white peach and blood orange; the wine quickly evolves to showcase a complex white with excellent minerality and a lingering finish with hints of candied orange peel and marzipan. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation on fine lees and is then aged in 30% new French oak barrels and 70% egg-shaped concrete tanks for 14 months.

Wine Information

Chardonnay: a grape variety among the most famous white varieties in the world, a grape that can give elegant citrus notes and an acidic backbone, but that is not common to find in Tuscany. Georg Weber loves a challenge, he is also a pioneer in this decision to plant Chardonnay at this latitude, an area not particularly renowned for white wines. To ensure freshness, the rows are oriented east west (all the rest of the vineyard is north south), so as to have less direct sun exposure, they are also planted higher to avoid heat from the soil. The result is a unique wine, important and full of character, a small production with numbered bottles and Prooftag for authentication. The large selection made in the vineyard makes this Chardonnay exceptional; also because of the proximity of the sea that lowers the Maremman temperatures and gives it a unique finesse. The deep gold color makes it precious to the eyes, the crisp attack that lingers on lemon, brioche, pleasant pineapple enjoys the palate, the cedar explosion, honey, toast, vanilla, honeysuckle, is an irresistible perfume.

Written Notes

Bright yellow colour. Lean and fresh nose of lemon and pineapple enhanced with lovely refined toasty, spicy and buttery aromas. Dry and crispy medium-bodied palate. Fresh and vivid fruitiness. Lingering, gently spicy finish. Drinking well now but will show more flavours after cellaring of 2-3 years. Decant for 1 hour and serve at 10-12C with Sole Meunière and nutmeg flavoured potato purée. – JL 91p (11/2018)

Intense yellow colour with slightly golden hue. Slighty closed character with hint of toasting aroma, yellow stone fruit and a touch of tropical fruit in the background. On the palate well structured with almost salty mineral, creamy texture but also freshness. ripe yellow stone fruit and hints of vanilla in the aftertaste. A very elegant wine with length and depth.

Inside Information

The winery gently sits on the Grosseto hills, which reveal only the above ground. The structure has been studied in detail, following the parameters encoded for the production of great wines. Majestic is the barrel room, an almost sacred place in the heart of the hill. Inside you can find about 600 barrels of medium toast French Oak - the best wood for the production of high quality wines - purchased from 10 different manufacturers, in addition to quality, variety is essential so that the different characteristics complement to increase complexity. The sea of barrels is visible from the tasting room window on the upper floor, a spectacular glance which gives the cellar an almost magical aura. But it is not just a spectacular space, there is much more: every element is part of a functional design to the creation of excellent wines: insulation, controlled temperature and humidity. All of these elements are hidden to the naked eye. The great black columns hide wires and tubes, the floor covers a heating system in areas that allows you to raise the temperature to help the malolactic fermentation.
