The Story

Sons de Prades means 'the sounds of our past'. No sound amid the silent valley and the cold morning fog save the distant ring of church bells. This age-old symbol greets the sun's first rays as they outline the Serra de Prades mountains. Slowly the Milmanda vineyards awaken, recalling the sacred songs of ancient monasteries, the call of the royal hunting horn and the gentle murmur of grape pickers.

Appellation: DO Conca de Barberà
Grape variety: Chardonnay

Soil: Deep silt-rich calcareous clay soils that are moderately well drained and have a very high water holding capacity.
They encourage balanced vegetative growth in Chardonnay and produce wines that are varietally expressive and very
well suited to barrel aging. Reddish marl formations dating from the Oligocene.
Precipitation:  Annual average (historical): 493 mm
Temperature: Annual average (historical): 13,8ºC

Winemaking: Type of fermentation: 70% in stainless steel under controlled temperature and 30% in oak barrel / Number of days of fermentation: 12 days / Fermentation temperature: 14-16ºC
Ageing: 30% of the wine was aged for 6 months in 100% new, finegrained French oak

Alcohol level: 13,5% vol.
pH: 3,18
Total acidity: 5,2 g/L (tartaric a.)
Residual sugar: 0,6 g/L
Ageing potential: 4-6 years

Tasting notes: Luminous, pale gold color. A seductive nose offering exquisite floral (honeysuckle) and fruit (lemon) notes with undertones reminiscent of apricot jam. Wonderfully silky on the palate with subtle sweetness on the elegant finish (framed by smooth citrusy acidity).

Serving suggestion: Slightly richer fare like fish pie or simple salmon dishes (blanched or buttered). Pairs well with chicken, pasta in cream sauce, or mushroom risotto. Salads with cheese, like Caesar salad, or chicken salad with walnuts. Creamy or semi-firm goat cheeses. Serve at 12ºC.

Vintage 2018

SPAIN VINTAGE REPORT 2018

Wines from Spain has released its 2018 vintage report detailing the performance of each region, with most reporting a return to average yields following a challenging 2017 harvest, which saw widespread drought and heatwaves impact production.

“After several dry, hot vintages this year the rain came to Spain and in some regions the rainy spell lasted until early summer,” the report said. ” It was also a much cooler year with more gradual vine development and one where intense work in the vineyard was often necessary to keep yields in check and vineyard diseases at bay.

“The harvest began later and, with the benefit of fine weather in most of the country, picking took place steadily and well into the autumn. Yields were far more generous than last year and this should leave Spain in a strong competitive position.”

In brief:

– Weather: a cooler year with far more rain; fine harvest weather for most regions.

– Regional highlights: a far better year for Ribera del Duero, Bierzo, most areas of Castilla y
Leén and Valdeorras. Record crops for Campo de Borja and Monterrei and more
generous for Rioja and Carifiena.

– Wine character: fresher wines with moderate alcohol levels and strong varietal character.

Wine of Spain estimates a harvest yield of 48 million hl (source: OEMV), compared with the 36-38 million hl that was reported in 2017.
