The Story

This wine takes its name from the walls that protected the monastery at Poblet during the Mercenary Wars. The unmistakeable identity of Grans Muralles is thanks to the stony, slate ground (Licorella) of the region, and the grape varieties believed to be extinct, such as Garró an Querol, using modern viticultural techniques. Together with Cariñena and Monastrell they create the unique spirit of this wine..

Vintage 2017

SPAIN 2017 Vintage  /Extreme weather was seen across the wine world in 2017 and Spain was no exception. For most Spanish regions there were one or more climatic challenges to contend with including spring frost, drought, untypically high summer temperatures and occasional hail storms. Then, mercifully, the going got easier as more typical weather arrived for the August and September ripening period and generally very favourable harvest conditi...

Written Notes

42% Garnacha, 40% Cariñena, 5% Monastrell, 10% Querol and 3% Garró. Querol has a crazy mix of huge berries and tiny pea-size berries. Some of the varieties in this blend come from a massive 30-year project of research into indigenous varieties. Continental climate with a range of mountains protecting them from sea influence. A diverse mix of soils: Paleozoic slate and gravel beds, mineral-rich alluvial deposits, Serra de Prades stones, rocks and slates. Very deep, very stony (very stony! You should see the pictures!), limited water-holding capacity, very low calcium carbonate content. Each variety is picked and worked separately, in different ways: fermentation vessels, temperatures, maceration times, ageing etc. Mostly aged in new French oak, Tronçais thin grain, 65% new, for 18 months. pH 3.45, TA 5.88 g/l. 2017 was a warm and very dry year, but the vineyard here coped better.

Bovril, dried damsons, black figs, soy sauce. Rich umami notes. A little bit wild. Dried blueberries, fresh blueberries, a touch of biltong and dried game and dry herbs. Intense and concentrated but has a superb core of freshness and vivid, coiled energy that the Reserva Real lacks. Someone described this as having a ‘Catalan core’ – yes! Deep, dark, rugged, but there’s excitement here. A dragon wine.

Deep purple colour with slightly violet hue and black core. Concentrated yet elegant and expressive nose, dark chocolate, hints of vanilla, fine toasting, oak spices in the background. Backed by intense fruit, plums and black cherries, dark berries and ripe sloe. Meaty character. On the palate well structured and balanced with firm yet ripe tannins, mild acidity, meaty character and flavourful taste, reminiscent of dark stone fruits and dark berries, chocolate and fine toasting. A rich and opulent wine with excellent length.
