The 2015 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, which is matured in around 40% new oak, has a refined bouquet with gooseberry, lime, almond and grapefruit aromas, the oak neatly interwoven, gradually unfolding in the glass yet remaining focused. The palate has an almost flinty opening, very edgy but not shrill, a tensile and linear Domaine de Chevalier Blanc that is driven by the acidity, touches of crustacea coming through on the energetic finish. There is a twist of sour lemon and chalk popping up on the aftertaste. This is a great, intellectual, comparatively more reserved white from Olivier Bernard.

Score: 92/94 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (224), April 2016

Incredible depth of fruit and density. Full and powerful with so much fruit and richness yet remains fresh and clean. Purity. Massive yet vibrant and electric. Minerality length. Love the to taste this.

Score: 97/98 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

One of the clear wines of the vintage, the 2015 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a stunner. Rich and intense, yet also finely cut, the 2015 dazzles from the very first taste. A host of lemon confit, white peach and slate notes race across the palate. Remarkably fresh and vivid, the 2015 offers an alluring interplay of textural creaminess and energy. I imagine the 2015 will age effortlessly for decades, as these wines do. The 2015 is 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, fermented in barrel, with blocked malo. Domaine de Chevalier's Blanc remains a reference point, perhaps the reference point, for dry white wine in Bordeaux. Don't miss it!

Score: 93/96 Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2016

The fruit on the nose is sweet depth of flavour the palate starts with ripe greengage richness complexity of flavours. There is an underling citrus freshness bright at the back but sweet fruit comes through giving richness on the finish.

Score: 93/95 Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, April 2016

Year in year out, this is one of the best dry whites in Bordeaux. Focused and precise, it’s spicy, dense and rich on the palate, with a thread of grapefruity acidity, stylish toasty oak and a creamy texture. There’s a sense of something in reserve here. Drink: 2017-25

Score: 93 Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016

Smoky, stony nose - obviously 'serious'. Very distinctive. Very mineral. Bone dry. Juicy. An absolutely model dry-white-bordeaux-style wine. Oakiness not an issue. All vineyard. Drink 2019-2030

Score: 18 Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2016

The Story

Olivier Bernard's extensive project at Domaine de Chevalier has really come to fruition. After a bold and not to mention expensive re-planting program throughout the `80s and then a decade and a half of patience for the vines to gain maturity, we can really see the benefits. 2005, 2008, 2009 and now 2010 rank amongst the very best wines produced in this sprawling commune. Powerful but graceful, true to their terroir, and just so enjoyable to drink; this has become one of our 'must buy' estates. Olivier's wines offer 'super second' class at relatively affordable prices.

Winemaker's notes: Intense, fresh and elegant nose, of vine peach, acacia blossom and honeysuckle mixed with mineral and smoky notes (quartz, silica). Delicately creamy and rich palate despite a good acid tension. Exquisite concentration, energy and radiance of fruity taste. Good volume without heaviness. Great long finish.

Written Notes

Lovely buttery and toasty nose shows great intensity and nice spicy tones. The dry and crisp palate is very broad and rich yet round and elegant. Vivid toasty flavours are combined with warming sensation and vibrant lemony avidity and solid mineral backbone. Long and lingering finish. Will evolve for nicely next 5-10 years. If served now, decant for 2 hours and serve with grilled white fish and coral sauce. JL 94p (12/2020)

Domaine de Chevalier - not that expressive as Smith Haut Lafitte, but more elegance and finesse here. 96p

Bright yellow colour. Opulent nose with ripe apricots and peaches, hints of lemon-peel and citrus fruit, elegant spiciness, slightly closed character. On the palate opulent and rich but with excellent freshness, minerality, depth and length.
  • 97p
Pale colour Fresh grapefruit, ginger aromas with yeasty tonic water notes. Well concentrated wine grapefruit, biter lemon flavours, touch of glacé fruits, fine looseknit chalky textures and lovely saline mineral length. 94 points
