The Story

Planted in the heat-soaked expanse of the Tuscan Maremma, Chardonnay ought to fail. The Mediterranean summer is too unrelenting, the sun too fierce. Yet Georg Weber made a calculated wager—fueled not by obligation, but by a lifelong reverence for the complex, place-reflective texture of great white Burgundy. Against the odds, his bet succeeds in Capalbio. Tucked just five kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea on clay-limestone soils strewn with e...

Wine Information

The 2021 growing season in coastal Tuscany was marked by a chilly spring that delayed budbreak, followed by a hot, bone-dry summer that was brilliantly tempered by cooling maritime breezes, ultimately yielding exceptionally concentrated yet vibrant fruit. The resulting 2021 Monteverro Chardonnay pours a radiant grey-gold and opens with a complex bouquet of fresh pear, apricot, and toasted brioche laced with a distinct hint of smoky gunpowder. ...

Written Notes

Pale gold with green reflections. Aromas of lemon zest, white peach and green apple are layered with hints of citrus blossom, almond and subtle oak spice. The palate is vibrant and refined, offering fresh orchard fruit, citrus and a touch of creamy texture balanced by bright acidity. Elegant and precise, with a clean, mineral-driven finish that adds length and finesse.

The 2021 Monteverro Chardonnay is a stunningly opulent and "Burgundian" expression from the Tuscan coast, balancing Maremma’s sun-drenched richness with a sophisticated, world-class precision. The nose is an inviting and complex bouquet of ripe Golden Delicious apple, Meyer lemon curd, and white peach, elegantly framed by high-quality French oak notes of toasted brioche, vanilla bean, and a hint of wild Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and remarkably creamy, where a dense core of buttery orchard fruit is perfectly counterbalanced by a vibrant, saline acidity and a distinct flinty minerality that lends the wine a refreshing, vertical lift. The finish is long, aristocratic, and impeccably balanced, leaving a lingering trail of roasted almonds and citrus zest that confirms this as one of Italy's premier white wine achievements.
