99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The prodigious 2001 Cariad is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, primarily from two of David Abreu’s vineyard holdings in Napa Valley (Madrona Ranch and Thorevilos). Complex notes of burning embers, charcoal, red and black fruits, subtle oak, licorice and cedarwood soar from the glass of this highly perfumed, stunning wine. It has everything going for it, including a flawless, seamless style, remarkable balance, stunning concentration and a finish that lasts nearly a minute. There is an open-knit character that makes it very accessible even though the wine still gives the impression of being a teenager in its developmental time-line. (RP)

The Story

Cariad, the Welsh word for “love”, is a Bordeaux-style red wine blended from three outstanding vineyards owned and managed by David Abreu. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch are blended with small amounts of fruit from Thorevilos and Howell Mountain, producing a wine of enormous proportions with a classic structure that is the Colgin hallmark: a plethora of vibrant aromas, voluptuous at mid-palate, with impeccable balance and an exceptionally long finish. A wine as seductive as its name.

Wine Information

This Bordeaux style blend embodies the structure that has become the hallmark of Colgin wines: bright jammy fruit aromas and character combined with soft ripe tannins. The wine is hedonistic in its complexity!

The 2001 "Cariad" is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. The word "cariad" means love in Welsh.

Winemaker notes from Mark Aubert:

"Our third release of this Bordeaux inspired blend shows an enticing sense of place. The 2001 growing season reigned supreme and as a result, the wine was truly made in the vineyard. The terroir of the renowned Madrona Ranch coupled with David Abreu's careful viticultural techniques provided us with grapes that were very ripe and deeply colored. The wine has a deeply saturated red color with a black hue in the centerline and exudes uplifting aromatics of orange rind and exotic spices such as tamarind complex. Cariad was fermented in small vats and then allowed to remain on the skins for upwards of forty-five days encouraging many secondary aromatics to develop. The wine was aged in 100% new Taransaud barrels for eighteen months and was bottled without fining or filtration.

The 2001 Cariad blend portrays the vintage and the pedigree with seamless, velvety rich, almost chocolate like tannins, wonderful ripeness and signature hedonism. The 2001 vintage is well structured for both near term drinkability or long term aging."

We released 440 cases of 2001 Colgin "Cariad" in November 2004. Release price $200.
