The Story

The winemaker’s role is to reflect the best the terroir has to offer and to reproduce the intrinsic taste parameters that correspond to Domaine de Chevalier.

Olivier Bernard describes Domaine de Chevalier’s white wines: “Our aim is not to make the wine as fruity as possible at all costs. Measured extraction and barrel ageing create very complex wines – beautifully fresh, never heavy, and with an incredibly long aftertaste that “unfolds like a peacock’s tail”... We target the long term and make a great wine that needs time to reveal its full potential.”

Thomas Stonestreet confirms that “Domaine de Chevalier blanc is an incredibly complex wine, that can age for many years ... It features much more than just fruitiness. It also very velvety, rich, and concentrated...”

Rémi Edange has much to say about the wine’s bouquet: “An incredibly complex nose... Above and beyond the varietal aromas there are empyreumatic overtones of resin, smoke, liquorice, coffee, and even, in certain vintages, cedar and Havana cigars... With regard to the fruit, Domaine de Chevalier often shows quince as well as peach, apricot, pineapple, tropical fruit (lychees), and citrus. In older vintages, the bouquet is reminiscent of a fine Sauternes. As if this were not enough, there are also floral overtones of vine flowers, herb teas (lime-blossom, verbena), etc...”

Olivier Bernard has this to say about his red wines: “Domaine de Chevalier rouge has good structure and a great deal of finesse, complexity, and ageing potential – which does not exclude a smooth, fruity quality that makes it enjoyable in its youth. Always balanced, never aggressive, power is by no means the priority...”

Rémi Edange adds: “Chevalier’s red wines are well-structured with round, very fine, tight-knit tannin... They are tremendously elegant and distinguished with a very long aftertaste and more delicacy than power...”

Written Notes

Tasted in February 2022. 65% C. Sauvignon + 30% Merlot + 5% P. Verdot. Alcohol is only 13%. A sophisticated, intense nose of blackberries and blueberries. Full-bodied on the palate with excellent structure, complexity and length. P. Verdot contributed with a strong backbone, C. Sauvignon with graphite and lush black fruit coming from Merlot The fruit cooperated perfectly with sweet and grained tannin. Great sophisticated touch. Big finish. The best vintage from Domaine de Chevalier yet? For me, it is as thrilling as 2018 vintage and may surpass it in the long run!

60% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc.
Inky crimson. Ripe, rich black fruit, cassis and black cherry. A slight leafy/herbal note adding freshness. More leafy on the palate but not green or unripe, just very scented Cabernet. Tannins are finely textured, becoming chewy as you taste, but polished. One of the most complete wines tasted so far in this small line-up of Pessac reds. (JH)

he 2019 Domaine de Chevalier was harvested between 23 September and 12 October, underwent a triple sorting and a 30 day maceration before maturation in 35% new oak. It needs gentle coaxing in the glass, eventually offering broody blackberry, sous-bois, cedar and light brine scents that are certainly more cerebral than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied on the entry with crisp tannins, slightly chalky in texture, fresh and mineral. It is very complex towards the finish with blackberry, sea salt and mineral notes, completing an intellectual Domaine de Chevalier with long ageing potential. 94-96points

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Very refined yet expressive nose, dark berries, e.g. blackberries, sweet elderberries, Boysenberries, wonderful aroma reminiscent of toasted gingerbread, hints of candied orange peel in the background, a touch of violets. On the palate rich yet elegant with wonderful freshness, ripe tannins, fine roasting flavour, juicy fruit and again gingerbread in the aftertaste. A great wine with precision and purity, a wonderful textbook sample of 2019.
