The Story

La Mouline is a steeply terraced amphitheater on the Côte Blonde, a shape that shelters the 2.5 acre site from the wind and acts as a heat trap.  Soils are gneiss with lightly colored silicone containing limestone loess.  The site is planted to 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, with the two varieties picked together and co-fermented. This extra dose of Viognier gives La Mouline its telltale aromatic complexity and additional softness and roundness; ...

Written Notes

The 2020 Rhône vintage was warm, sunny, and generous, marked by an early budbreak, a hot summer, and historically early harvest dates. Despite the warmth, the steep, ventilated terraces of Côte-Rôtie—especially in Côte Blonde—benefited from cool nights and exceptional canopy health, preserving freshness, perfume, and silky phenolic ripeness. Low yields produced wines of density, intensity, and wonderful purity.

For La Mouline, 2020 stands as a vintage of aromatic brilliance, opulence, and impeccable texture, marrying richness with the cuvée’s signature elegance.

The La Mouline 2020 is a breathtaking wine—seductive, perfumed, and seamlessly layered, capturing the essence of Côte Blonde at its most sensual. The nose opens in a cascade of aromatics: violets, crushed rose, wild strawberry, and black raspberry, intertwined with exotic notes of peach skin, apricot blossom, and sweet spice from the co-fermented Viognier. Beneath the florality lies a deeper core of smoked meat, black olive tapenade, white pepper, and warm granite, unmistakably Mouline.

On the palate, the wine is silky, opulent, and utterly harmonious. The texture is pure cashmere—pillowy yet structured—with tannins that feel sculpted and seamlessly woven. Layers of red cherry, raspberry coulis, and boysenberry flood the palate, lifted by vibrant acidity and the aromatic lift granted by Viognier. Savory nuances of smoked herbs, cured ham, star anise, and graphite unfold through the mid-palate. The finish is long, exotic, and resonant, echoing floral perfume and stony minerality for minutes.

A magnificent La Mouline—sensual, expressive, and sublime, balancing the richness of the 2020 vintage with the cuvée’s trademark finesse. It can be approached young for its hedonistic charm, but its greatest complexity will reveal itself over the next 20–30+ years.
