History

The House of Laurent-Perrier was founded in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot and took the name Vve Laurent-Perrier when Mathilde Emilie Perrier, the widow of Eugène Laurent, combined the two family names after she decided to expand the business. Eugénie Hortense Laurent, her daughter, inherited the House in 1925 and sold it to Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt in 1939.

During WWII, Marie-Louise Lanson de Nonancourt ran the business while two of her sons, Maurice and Bernard, joined the French Resistance. In 1945, Bernard de Nonancourt began an exacting apprenticeship, learning every aspect of winemaking from vine to cellar, before his appointment in October 1948 as Chairman and Chief Executive. At that point, the House was employing around 20 people and shipping 80,000 bottles a year.

Fired by a passion for champagne, a respect for traditional values and, most importantly, for people, Bernard de Nonancourt inspired Laurent-Perrier with his independent spirit and creative audacity. He established privileged working relationships with the grape growers and cleverly combined innovation and tradition. He created the signature Laurent-Perrier style of freshness, lightness and elegance and developed a unique range of champagnes which are today exported to 147 countries worldwide.

Winemaking

In the House’s view, art, elegant lines, and the beauty of objects and places are inseparable from man’s daily preoccupations with wines, their vinification, their blending, and their patient maturing during the long years of cellar ageing.

As far back as the early 1960s, the first winery made using enamelled steel was presented with as much fanfare as if it had featured noble oak casks and barrels. The new, dedicated Grand Siècle winery, is being installed in the same location.

Isolated behind two sets of glass doors, 14 tanks each with a capacity of 110 hectolitres are lined up equidistantly along the central aisle. From the arching roof overhead, the light falls onto the graceful stainless steel curves of the tanks, infinitely reflected in the shimmer of the high-tech LED lighting, making them seemingly endless.

Wine Moments

Essi Avellan MW , Wine Writer (Finland)  tasted  2 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  17 wines

Bollinger La Grande Année 2014 / “An intriguing combination of a sunny year’s forward fruitiness and late September harvest’s freshness. These characters get further amplified by the high percentage of Chardonnay and important share of cooler profile Verzenay Pinot Noir in the blend. On the nose ripe peach, candied apple and vanilla blend in beautifully with delicate floral and lemony notes as well as mineral iodine whiffs. The gentle oaky note stylishly stays in the background. There is supple volume on the lacey-textured palate, but this wine plays much less on concentration and weight than what we are used to with La Grande Année. Instead its finest feature is the salivating acidity and sensation of minerality that carries the wine until the long, palate-cleansing finish. Already open and pleasurable on the nose, but the palate stands firm with mineral restraint promising longevity. Perfectly dosed at 8g/l. Note for a bottle disgorged in April 2021.”

Pekka Nuikki / Editor of the Fine Wine Magazines, Wine Writer (Finland)  tasted  1 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  12 wines

Krug Vintage Champagne 2000 / 98 points /Elegant orange-hued colour. Lively small-sized bubbles last well in the glass. The nose is fruit-driven and elegant with spicy notes and dried fruit and brioche aromas. An intensely fruity palate with a lovely silky mouth-feel and good weight. Sublime acidity refreshes the round and rich palate. The length is long and harmonious. A long and glorious future lies ahead of this already super enjoyable vintage Krug.

A journey to Champagne brought some interesting insights to famous houses and new discoveries with excellent tastings and some amazing wines.

After a loooong wait of two long, we got finally the world's best champagne fair – Grand Champagne – organised. Superb bunch of chefs de cave, great selection of champagnes and bubbly atmosphere, what else do you need! And the best champagne for me was........Charles Heidsieck La Collection de Crayères 1981 in Jeroboam (98p)!

James Halliday, Wine Writer (Australia)  tasted  1 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  6 wines

Rubicon 2016, the deep garnet-purple colored Cabernet Sauvignon gives up bold notions of crushed red and black currants, wild blueberries and blackberry preserves with touches of violets, dark chocolate, cardamom and bay leaves plus a hint of unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals great elegance and depth, with a beautiful line of finely grained tannins and amazing freshness, finishing long and layered.

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  tasted  1 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  14 wines

Inspired by James Bond – No Time to Die, we included Château Angelus 2003 (96p) in our Tour de France dinner. What a crowd pleaser. Rich and intense. In wonderful condition now but left no  doubt that this wine will evolve beautifully another 5-10 years. The aristocratic La Mission Haut-Brion 1998 (97p) shone on a par with Angelus, with its classic charming style. The joker of the eve, Stag's Leap Artemis 2014 (92p) served with aged hard cheeses was a true charmer with its dense finesse.

Michael Scott / Wine Importer, Pro (Canada)  tasted  1 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  11 wines

Charles Heidsieck Vintage 2008/The attack on the palate is delicate and develops gently. The bubbles seem to melt within the body of the wine, which is robust, and supported by the sugar content attains a comfortingly creamy texture that is particularly enjoyable, almost reminiscent of umami. Throughout the tasting, the acidity heightens, culminating in the finish, which is very long (over 10 seconds) and delivers a burst of intense flavors: acidity, sweetness and salinity. It closes with a chalky minerality, with aromas of honey and brioche lingering on the palate.

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  tasted  1 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  8 wines

The Napa Red lineup from 1991 to 2018 showed once again the greatness of Napa reds. They are so enjoyable at the very early stage like Blankiet Rive Droite 2018 (97p) is still a baby but so charming and elegantly volaptuous. Heitz Martha's Vineyard 2013 is a teenager who is just starting to bloom and Merryvale's Profile from the great vintage 1991 (94p) pleases with its gracefully aged opulent style.

Antonio Galloni, Wine Writer (United States)  tasted  2 wines  from  Laurent-Perrier . In a tasting of  26 wines

The NV Brut Grande Cuvée Grand Siècle No. 24 (Magnum) is ethereal and beautifully lifted. White flowers, mint, white pepper and green orchard fruit all grace this exquisite, super-expressive Champagne. I would cellar the No. 24, as it is pretty tight today and also not ready to deliver the full Grand Siècle experience. The blend is 2007 (60%), 2006 (20%) and 2004 (20%), three vintages that are especially complementary. Disgorged May 27, 2019.
