Wine Information

At the beginning of the 1950’s, Laurent-Perrier was a small family house that Bernard de Nonancourt, wanted to raise to the rank of Grande Maison. At the time, vintage in Champagne, was synonymous with excellence for prestigious cuvées. However, Bernard de Nonancourt thought differently: for him, only blending can bring us what a great vintage cannot do: to recreate the perfect year.

Starting from his observation based on experience, the perfect year would be the one that brings together the main characteristics of Champagne vintages: structure, freshness and finesse. This is how his first creation, Grand Siècle, a unique prestigious cuvée in Champagne was born in 1959.

Its blend is based on 4 principles that are now immutable:
1. a blend of 3 rare and exceptional vintage years made by Laurent-Perrier
2. a choice of 11 Grand Crus amongst the 17 that exist in Champagne
3. one dominant year complemented with 2 earlier years
4. the majority Chardonnay with the balance Pinot Noir.

This rigor in the selection has allowed us to develop only 24 iterations since its creation. 24 different blends expressing their own characteristics whilst maintaining the Grand Siècle style. We do not decide to craft Grand Siècle; it is Nature that offers it to us.

Grand Siècle must therefore meet this permanent objective of achieving the perfect balance in its composition among the characteristics of the great vintage years. For each of these years, we will seek the expression of certain Grands Crus, carefully chosen, individually vinified and assembled according to their personality.

At Laurent-Perrier time is of essence: this wine benefits from long aging of over 10 years in the cellars before the ideal moment is decided on to unveil a new iteration.

Grand Siècle is a champagne whose mineral and citrus notes come from the chalky terroirs of the Grands Crus de Chardonnay which give it a great deal of freshness. Pinot Noir meanwhile gives elegance with beautiful fruity aromas and structure. Balance reigns in this wine. Its intensity and aroma give it depth and complexity, its finish is long and surprisingly fresh despite its long aging. Grand Siècle, the ultimate expression of our quest for quality, is a unique champagne that goes well beyond rare vintages to recreate, with each new iteration, the perfect year.

Written Notes

The NV Brut Grande Cuvée Grand Siècle No. 24 (Magnum) is ethereal and beautifully lifted. White flowers, mint, white pepper and green orchard fruit all grace this exquisite, super-expressive Champagne. I would cellar the No. 24, as it is pretty tight today and also not ready to deliver the full Grand Siècle experience. The blend is 2007 (60%), 2006 (20%) and 2004 (20%), three vintages that are especially complementary. Disgorged May 27, 2019.

Bottle. The 24th iteration of Grand Siècle since the 1960s, now signalled with a ‘24’ on the bottle neck. 60% 2007, 20% 2006, 20% 2004, launched now. Mostly Chardonnay (55%) and Pinot Noir (45%), all grand cru. Disgorged October 2018 after 10 years on lees. Dosage 7 g/l.
Deep greenish yellow. Creamy, oaked Chardonnay sort of nose recalls white burgundy. Much richer than the Blanc de Blancs of course but with the same tight texture and filigree mousse. Firm and noble.

A fantastic prestigious cuvée this year with a solid core of fruit that makes it so serious and structured. Like a grand cru Burgundy. Full body. Lightly chewy. Phenolic tension gives it form and beauty. This is the first year to use numbers. 55% chardonnay and 45% pinot noir. 2004, 2002 and 1999. Drink or hold.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is yellow, and looking bright and medium. On the nose it is open, intense, youthful, charming, refined, complex and rich. The taste is refined, fresh, focused, elegant, robust, toasty, and dry, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with complex, multi-dimensional, well-integrated, perfectly balanced, concentrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has citrus, toasty, white fruits, mint, mineral, bread and apricot flavours. The finish is long, pure, vibrant and lingering. This wine is sophisticated and impressive. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 15min before tasting.

BWW- The Best Wine of the World 2023 -competition

"We believed the opinion of 10,000 consumers or 1,000 professionals to be more correct and more significant than a small group of wine professionals.”

BWW-The Best Wine of the World-competition is by far the toughest wine competition on this planet. Unlike any other industry competition, less than 1% of the wines involved will be awarded.

BWW is also the largest wine competition: The BWW competition 2021 was held in the world's largest wine information service - tastingbook.com. 21,556 wines received in total 3,569,711 votes from 349,000 wine professionals and wine lovers from 116 countries during the three months voting period.
