The Story

These cuvées are truly exceptional, as they are made up solely of wines from the same year. These years (1983, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2004, 2006, 2007) are recognized as extraordinary by our cellar masters and selected with extreme care for their unusual maturation capacities.

Blanc de Millénaires is a masterpiece cuvée from the Côte des Blancs in a legendary vintage.
17 years’ worth of complexity and yet so fresh.

A precise selection of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs - 4 Grands Crus and 1 Premier Cru.
A unique emotion, an impression of eternity, much like the feeling one has when standing in the heart of the 2000-year old chalk cellars after which this wine is named.
17 years’ worth of complexity.

More than 15 years maturation in the heart of the 2000-year old gallo roman chalk cellars after which this wine is named.
This legendary wine, which has been awarded numerous medals and trophies, deserves an exceptional case: the gift box, which mirrors the curves of the crayères cellars, echoes the nobility of this location where nothing counts except time itself.

Today, all the pieces in the Charles Heidsieck puzzle are finally finding their place. Rémy Cointreau acquired the house of Piper Heidsieck in 1990, and since then a merging of the two houses has taken place. The company is now P&C Heidsieck, with all vinification and cellaring taking place under the same roof by the same qualified hands. And quite a winery it is. The companies left the crowded ancient cellars in the heart of Reims and moved to more spacious surroundings on the outskirts of the town in 2008. The new ultramodern design winery has all the latest winemaking equipment as well as fantastic touristic facilities.

However, nurturing two brands in one winery evidently poses some problems. At P&C Heidsieck differentiation is managed by separating the house styles and brand images. The flashy-red marketing driven brand Piper’s champagne is fresh, vibrant and easy to drink. The wines for the more restrained and classic Charles are rich and evolved, very much a crafted for the gastronomy.
When I visited the cellar at blending time, I was given an interesting tasting exercise. I sampled a dozen still wines from all three grape varieties and altering villages. My task was to decide whether the base wine should go to Charles of Piper depending on the style. The aspired styles for both houses became crystal-clear to me when I was picking structured wines for extended aging for Charles and lively fruit-forward samples for Piper.

The winemaking hands at P&C Heidsieck belong today to Régis Camus, who took over in 2002, when Daniel Thibault passed away unexpectedly. Fortunately, Camus had worked together with Thibault for years. Consequently, the change has not brought about drops in quality or alterations in style. Even though replacing someone as legendary as Thibault is not easy, Camus has shown his capabilities as a great blender especially via the steadily rising quality of Piper Heidsieck and the numerous trophies earned by Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve and Brut Rosé.

The secret is out. If you have not yet encountered Charles Heidsieck, now is the time to get to know Charlie!

Vintage 1995

A welcome relief after some difficult years in the region. Quantity-wise, it was the seventh high-cropping year in a row. But, in 1995, the quality also excelled, and particularly so for Chardonnay. There were significant frost damages during the spring and the warm but wet weather in the summer ignited mildew and rot problems. The vines cropped heavily and rigorous vineyard work and selection during harvest led to best results. Harvest commenced on September 18th and yielded grapes of a fine balance of sugar and acidity. The vintage has turned out to be much better than first expected and it has emerged from the shadow of the much-hyped 1996. This vintage is marked by elegance of its inviting fruitiness, beautiful balance and slow-building finesse. Its greatest examples include Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires, Dom Pérignon (whole range), Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Bollinger R.D, Krug Vintage and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.

Written Notes

So silky-smooth and with such intensive nut toffee! The toastiness is there, but lying swimming in an oily nectar which prevents it from really making its way forward as it does in many other vintages. Pretty mousse and uplifting charm.

The 1995 Brut Blanc des Millenaires shows just how compelling this often overlooked vintage can be. Layers of lemon, pastry, spices, crushed rocks and savory herbs literally jump from the glass. An exquisite, perfumed, beautifully delineated Champagne, the 1995 shows lovely flavor complexity and nuance from its extended time in bottle, yet it also retains plenty of freshness, verve and acidity. This is a great showing from Charles Heidsieck. The 1995 was made before the tenure of the house’s current team, headed by CEO Cecile Bonnefond. It will be very interesting to see what develops at this historic property over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

A well-developed, very toasty and rich nose of cream and coffee. Elegantly vinous and wide taste match up to the nose. An extremely harmonious and pleasantly mellow wine.

  • 92p

A fine gold, deep straw yellow colour, a nice cordon for a very brilliant wine. Floral first impression with violet aromas followed by smooth, fruity nuances of apricot and quince preserve. A touch of fresh fig followed by a warm finish marked by cappuccino cream and liquorice, the finish develops between hazelnut and lavender, honey and quince. An elegant and distinguished wine, with distinct freshness, cellared at the Heidsieck caves at Reims, pure nectar after almost two decades of maturity.

Charles Heidsieck 1995 Blanc de Millionaires Open and intense, toasty nose with lemon, candied lemon zest, yellow apples, sweet pasrt, brioche, melted butter, roasted nuts and marzipan. With air more subtle limey mineral notes appear. Full palate, round and very smooth but balanced by a fresh acidity and structural grip. More fruity than nose with stone fruits, paeches, yellow apples, citrus up front but coated in autolytic complexity with roasted nuts, grains and sweet pastry. Long, smooth finish with solid length, grip and a mineral bite on the end. This is utterly tasty now but will keep. Tasted three times with consistant notes. Drink now-2027 95p.
