The 1955 Angélus was opened at the château by Hubert de Bouard – in fact, he opened two bottles, since he felt the first did not show as well as expected. It is certainly an enjoyable mature Saint-Émilion, though neither bottle reaches the heights of the 1953. Light red cherry fruit, rather balsamic in style, accompanies aromatics that show less vigor than the aforementioned '53. The palate is nicely balanced with light red fruit, cedar and the soy-like element that indicates this is just past its best. Thoroughly enjoyable, but bottles should be consumed in the near future given the perfect provenance of these examples. Tasted at the château.
