The Story

Château Angelus is one of the largest and most prestigious St-Emilion estates and was promoted to1er grand cru classé status in the 1996 St-Emilion reclassification. Since 2012 ranked Premier grand cru classé (A) in the Classification of Saint-Émilion wine. Passionately managed for over four generations, Angelus is owned and run by two cousins, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, andJean-Bernard Grenie and is located in the centre-west of the St-Emilion appellation, due west of St-Emilion town.

 Chateau Angelus, which has been making wine in St-Emilion for almost 250 years, is still considered "new" for that appellation. It was founded by, and has always been run by, the de Bouard family. The name "Angelus" means the ringing of bells to commemorate a catholic devotion, and the workers in the Chateau Angelus vineyards can hear the bells ringing from three nearby churches...thus how the winery got its name. Although the quality of the wine has had some rough years, the quality of the terroir is one of the best in St-Emilion. And with some key education and talent emerging from the de Bouard family in the past 40 years, the winery is now realizing its potential and has rocketed to one of the top, most sought-after labels in the region. A blend of the merlot and cab franc, from perfectly balanced soils of limestone and clay, the real Cindarella story of Chateau Angelus in not the world class terroir or fruit, but of the winemaking practices that have been put in place over the past 40 years. Hubert de Boüard de Laforest joined the family business at Angélus in 1976 and proceeded to make several modernizing changes to the vinification that allows him more control over the quality. Under his management, and the consultancy of oenologist Michel Rolland, the estate has been consistently moving up in its classifications, eventually attaining Premier grand cru classe A in 2012. The style of Chateau Angelus is lush, dense and creamy, but also elegant, classy and pure with lots of freshness. There is a second wine, called Le Carillon d’Angélus, and a third wine, called No. 3 d’Angélus. You can see the bell, the Angelus, represented in the Chateau's label, cork, case and capsule markings, as well as in the elaborate sculpture that installed in the back of the main building. It makes it easy for you to imagine being transported to this majestic Bordeaux vineyard, hearing the bells ringing, smelling the sweet grapes, and feeling the sun warming you and the soil under your feet.

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat resulted in early flowering. Also, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and one can expect a more opulent vintage than in the last few years.

The summer this year has been the warmest since 1959, yet the rain has fallen at the right times during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will yield grapes with high potential alcohol and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: "It has been a good and extreme growing season which hopefully also produces great wines".

2020 Château Angelus
APR 21 60M 40CF Ruby. Blackberries, blueberries, floral, scented, violets, layered and detailed nose, quite scented. The three large 30HL fudre for Cabernet Franc introduced in 2018 really seems to make Cabernet Franc way more scented than earlier vintages of Angelus. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, spices, intense, dark fruits, blackberries, detailed, liquorice layer to it, detailed and long. Ca PH 3,5 to 3,65 and 97-99

The 2020 Angélus has an opaque purple-black color, pulling you in with a captivating perfume of kirsch, Black Forest cake, ripe plums, violets and molten licorice, followed by wafts of underbrush, raspberry leaves and graphite, plus a hint of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate already offers beautiful balance and expression at this nascent stage, featuring bright, crunchy red and black fruits with remarkable energy and tension. Its amazingly plush, silken texture carries all these shimmering flavors to a very long and fragrant finish. This jaw-dropping expression of 2020 is simply stunning. The blend this year is 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot, due to be aged 18-22 months in French oak barriques, 100% new, and two new foudres. The wine has pH of 3.65 pH and an alcohol of 14.5%.

“This is a vintage we like a lot,” said Hubert de Boüard. “It’s like a super 2001. There are wild flowers—like violets—in the wine. It is a very harmonious vintage.” “The first part of the season was very wet with high mildew pressure,” Hubert’s daughter, Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal, CEO and co-owner of Château Angélus, added. “We are still in organic conversion, so this was challenging. The second part of the year, we were in drought. But we have clay across the vineyard. It worked like a tank of water. After two months with no rain, we were worried, so we dug in the ground in the vineyard. The clay two meters down was still wet and fresh!” “The style of 2020 is—well, maybe some people pushed it too much,” Hubert said. “The skins were very thick. The risk was too much. A few wines have a little bit too much extraction. We kept the fermentation temperature low and were very gentle. We are getting more precision with the tannins. We wanted the least intervention.” “We are looking to bring more pixels to the image of the wine,” Stephanie said. “The introduction of large oak foudres allows us to limit the oak impact and dissolved oxygen. We are aiming to age 60% in the foudres in the future. We don’t want anything filtering or hiding the fruit.” Then, I asked Stephanie about the Cabernet Franc, which provides a remarkable kind of shimmer to the blend this year. “We were very surprised to have a revelation with the Cabernet Franc when we were doing the blends. The Merlot we called ‘sublime,’ but we thought the Cabernet Franc a little shy to begin. Then it came through. Yes, the Cabernet Franc truly shines through this year!”

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Impressing nose with very complex and concentrated character,  aromatic purity and depth, ripe blackberries, cherries, hints of blackcurrants, liquorice and fragrant spiciness. On the palate well a wine with great precision and complex character, refined tannins, fine acidity and wonderful fruit. Aromatic depth, great freshness and excellent length coming together, creating the most elegant Angélus ever tasted en primeur.
