Vintage 2009

Much like 1947, 1961 and 2005, 2009 is a year of almost overly (for Bordeaux) flamboyant and opulent wines with high maturity and low acidity. The tannins are exceptionally ripe, while the wines are quite voluptuous in style. The Left Bank recorded more hours of sunshine than legendary vintages such as 1947 and 1982, and the grapes had higher sugar concentrations than in 2003 and 2005. The key was significant diurnal temperature variations tha...

Written Notes

This vintage benefitted from weather conditions that contributed to the production of perfectly ripe grapes. These wines are bright ink black. On the nose, the ripe fruit aromas are fresh, not jammy. Pure red cherries, raspberries, and blackberries. On the palate they display lovely concentration with substance, but are in no way heavy. Their silky tannins balance perfectly with their supple richness. These wines are powerful and concentrated, but velvet smooth and subtle too.

Harvest: 25th September to14th October
Blend: 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc
Drink: 2025 - 2045

If you've ever eaten really good British Christmas cake then you know what this lavish 2009 St.-Emilion smells and tastes like. Every bit as rich as it is polished with a long moderately dry finish packed with powdery tannins. Drink or hold.

Again very deep, maybe not quite so bright. The nose is pure, not as broad, coffee, very little coming through compared to the 2010. The palate is exciting, there is already charm and seduction here – it will drink earlier. There is savouriness to complement the black fruits, with earthiness too. 94-96/100? 2020-2040+. (£2,400 3x1 IB)

Deep ruby. Fruit driven, dark berries, spices and exotic flowers. Rich palate, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, barrel notes are still a bit showy in the finish. Very long finish. Wait for ten years or more.
